Having got the Nationalists just about wrapped up, this week I made a start on the Republicans. I envisage a force of Republican Militia stiffened with a few Guardia Civil, having acquired a handful from James I purchased another pack from Empress and they arrived on Thursday. I splashed a bit of paint on those yesterday and finished the bases today.

Very nice work. Well done. (For me though, I like to see the hats finished off in a matt gloss – just like in the Empress pictures) Excellent sculpts from Empress. Thanks for sharing. |

Not that many, Gaz. The divide was actually in the 45% siding with the Republic, 55% with the Rebels. |

Yes, but those that opted (as a matter of expedience or otherwise)for the government side were distinguishable from their Fascist opposite numbers by the wearing of a cut-down hat: the 'brim' was trimmed off leaving just the round portion. |

Kind of like a kepi
or pillbox hat.(They have just replaced their 'kepi' with a baseball cap but retain the tricorne for ceremonial duties) Bas66-apparently a common misconception, both the GC and the Guardia d'Assaltos split for both sides
as you say 55/45 pro-Nationalist for the GC and 35/65 in the case of the Assaltos (urban police)
..the legend of the more 'leftist' Assaltos in defending Madrid has tarred the GC with the Franco-ist brush
..that and their history of 'harsh' policing in Andalucia especially
also telling that the GC continued under Franco yet the Assaltos were disbanded. |

Nice! I do agree with the shiny hat thing though. A satin varnish would do the trick. But you know that already I'm sure :-) |

Thanks chaps, I have some brush on gloss that I can give a try. |

Agree with all the comments about glossy head gear. My Civil Guard have shiny hats and look all the better for it. Lovely painting though. |
