Back in the day, I was King of the Stifles! I guess civi life has moderated my language and gone half way to turning me into a 'silver tounged cavalier', well versed in the black arts of tact and diplomacy
But I'm still up there: 1 Bangorstu 496 2 Tango01 492 3 Captain DEwell 481 4 heyjoe 473 5 Gazzola 456 6 Flecktarn 374 7 Fennells Mead 355 8 Sparker 354 9 Hew Johns 347 10 TelesticWarrior 337 Interesting thing is – of these guys, the ones I know, I like! OK I disagree with Gazzola on, well, just about everything, but I reckon he's a gent. Certainly wouldn't enter his head to have a pop at a chap's family or anything ungentlemanly like that. So I take pride in my stifle count! And yes, it is a slow day at work, since you ask! Cheers! Sparks |

It's about seeing the glass as half full. Most people get stifled for being opinionated and blunt. They call it as they see it. Other people are just outrageous in their behavior and a stifle says, "You are driving me nuts! Many people stifle due to their inability to cope and handle opinions that are not of their liking. This seems rather immature to me. I don't stifle anymore. It is boring. Many times, I found myself undoing it so I gave it up. Those people say something I am interested in and then I must unstifled. This is a pain so I don't do it. I don't hate people but rather strongly disagree with their outlook. This to me poses a challenge on how to convince them to see it more my way or maybe they convince me to see it more their way-if they make a good argument. It is all in good fun in the end. |

I never stifle but have picked up 137. I thought I was pretty quiet here. Some of the names on that list surprise me. Gunfreak nearly has a double century for instance. I mean what can he possibly have said that generated that many? |

It is interesting – Gunfreak is always as nice as pie

Other than Tango and yourself, I don't recall seeing posts from the other gentlemen for a considerable period of time. (I don't get a lot of time to check so I could be very wrong). Still, if it's something you're after, I suppose being in the top ten is quite the feather to put in your cap. Congratulations! |

I now have 40, and I only have one person stifled. Maybe I'm not working it well enough. Sparker any advice? |
brunet | 26 Feb 2014 11:26 p.m. PST |
Thatotherguy No one sees any other posts then Tango on the front page!! This remark at least give me some more stiffles |
Sparker | 26 Feb 2014 11:39 p.m. PST |
Sparker any advice? Well standing by Tango seems to increase one's stifle count! Other than that, taking on the 'Hollywood' school of history never fails to accrue, particularly on the Napoleonic's boards! Certainly challenging views such as Wellington was a defensive general, the British seldom fought in line and the French were never in column, or proving that Wellington actually was quick and loud in praising the Prussians for saving his bacon at Waterloo doesn't seem to go down well with the 'so-clever' revisionist mob
There, I'spect I've gotten a few more now! :-) |

Martin Rapier | 27 Feb 2014 12:20 a.m. PST |
Expressing any kind of opinion on anything is sufficient to garner stifles. Still, it is another target to aim for, it is amusing that this one works while post and character count are broken. |
Silent Pool | 27 Feb 2014 3:48 a.m. PST |
Back in the day, I was King of the Stifles! I used to be #1! The King is dead. Long live the King. Actually Gentlemen, I have not been able to find any evidence for your claims to have been at one time or another #1 stifled TMPerson. In John the OFM's case, his current piddly little 128 stifles to date makes it appear highly unlikely. Are you sure your claims are more than simply aspirational? The quaint and amusing fuddled recollections of old gentlemen. The fact is, obnoxious, opinionated, argumentative, sour, devisive and troublesome – you ain't! Understand this. There is a new breed, a new royal family, of loathsome stifle princes the like which TMP has never seen before. Those in the Top Five are there for a reason. You are NOT there in the Top Five for a reason. Enjoy your retirement. (Naturally, if this post delivers me more stifles then I will not care
will I?) Love ya, don't want to be ya. |
Pete Melvin | 27 Feb 2014 3:52 a.m. PST |
I'm 23 for 1 on stifles. I generally can't see the point in them, the one stifle I've given was because the person would just NOT leave me alone. I remember my first Stifling well, it was for giving my opinion that some daft kickstarter would not reach funding (It was that Corpse-Hammer nonsense that looked like it was from 1994) but wishing the guy luck anyway and saying I hope I was wrong. I was not. |

Martin Rapier | 27 Feb 2014 4:46 a.m. PST |
" In John the OFM's case, his current piddly little 128 stifles to date makes it appear highly unlikely." I am sure I remember John being #1, back in the days when the world was young and stifling a big deal. People used to complain about him being a prolific poster from time to time. I amazed to see Flecktarn in the top ten, what has he ever done? I do recall he might have expressed some opinions mildly unsympathetic to the US world view at one point though. That is also a good way of getting stifles. |
brunet | 27 Feb 2014 4:58 a.m. PST |
The stiffle and posts count doesn't function at all.Maybe it's because the stiffle concept is worthless |
Gustav | 27 Feb 2014 6:36 a.m. PST |
All seems daft to me. Not sure why anyone would want to stifle you or anyone on that list. Personally not a stifler nor never intend to be. Funny thing is it does irk me a bit when I do get them for no real obvious reason. But then really it's their loss not mine :) |
Pete Melvin | 27 Feb 2014 7:38 a.m. PST |
I chalked up another one, I presume for the HIGHLY controversial post above. How could anyone bear to see what I wrote?! |
freewargamesrules | 27 Feb 2014 7:56 a.m. PST |
Don't see the point in stifles. If you don't like what people post don't read them. If you stifle that many people this isn't the place for you to be and go and find another forum. I have met bangorstu in person, he lives about 60 miles from me and he's a really nice guy. Personally, I don't stifle people, life's too short. Trouble with stifles is people use them as a badge of honour, shows you what shallow lives they have. |
wrgmr1 | 27 Feb 2014 9:29 a.m. PST |
Sparker – thanks for the suggestions. I've been on the Napoleonic's boards and involved in the Tango fracas's. I guess that's where I got me 40 so far. |
olicana | 27 Feb 2014 10:37 a.m. PST |
I've quoted it once, so I'll quote it again: "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." Winston Churchill. I'm not a big fan of Winnie. He was far too right of centre (not to mention an upper class pompous git) from my point of view, but I would not have stifled him and he would not have stifled me because he and I are aware that being 'liked' is nothing to be especially proud of. Those that stifle are little men. |
Nowami | 27 Feb 2014 11:47 a.m. PST |
Olicana mate, you don't have to do anything so grand to pick up stifles here. You can pick'em up just for saying you prefer Coke to Pepsi (though I prefer Pepsi to Coke). I'd estimate that 99.9% of the tough guys on here wouldn't say 'Boo!" to a goose is the real world. Could be wrong, it might only be 90%. Stifling – the last refuge of the feeble. (And if that doesn't bring in a decent crop I'll show my e on the Town Hall steps!) |
Brian Smaller | 27 Feb 2014 11:56 a.m. PST |
What gets me is that to stifle someone you have to click on their name and go to their profile page, scroll down and click Stifle. Seems like a lot of effort for what can be accomplished a lot easier by seeing their name and moving to the next comment in a thread. |
alien BLOODY HELL surfer | 27 Feb 2014 4:58 p.m. PST |
Is comparing stifle counts the new mine is bigger than yours? I meant kids talking about their dad's, not that you dirty minded person! ;-p |
badwargamer | 27 Feb 2014 5:30 p.m. PST |
Wow. I've just checked and I'm in the top 100! Didn't think I've said anything that controversial! Ah well, never mind..it doesn't actually mean anything, so not really bothered. Have been getting on with figure painting nicely the last few weeks :) |
goragrad | 27 Feb 2014 11:55 p.m. PST |
It is amazing how easy it is to pick up stifles, as noted above a seemingly slight difference of opinion can rate a couple. Been busy painting and hadn't posted much over the last few weeks. Came to TMP a couple of days ago and looked over the topics. Saw a couple by/concerning Tango. Posted an expression of incredulity at his being in the dawghouse. Read another historical discovery topic he started made a minor comment. Read through the comments on his 'Casting blacks in Arthurian/medieval dramas.' Posted a couple of links to dictionary definitions of the term 'Moor' that noted that it referred to North African Muslims, not black Africans. Was somewhat verbose. Came back next day to see my stifle count up by two. Don't really see the other two posts as triggering stifles, although defending/attacking Tango does seem to draw some. But then pointing out that Shakespeare's Othello wasn't black on a forum that is at least partially concerned with history shouldn't either. However that only got me to 41 so I have a long way to go
|
Zargon | 28 Feb 2014 3:48 a.m. PST |
Having a different view to some 'patriots' has led me to being stifled quite a bit in comparison to the amount of posts I have chimed in on, and being a fairly new members I am quite amused by their soft skined approach and use of this stifle (honest truth only found out how it's used just now ;) I don't need to use the feature. I can take it. Seeing as how many of these I have aquired I must be doing something right. Seems the " Uranian option" is prevalling amongst a few here on TMP let's not accept such undemocratic principles and not be swayed by the amount of flak they put up, its petty anyway. Cheers to all of you in the 'Black sheep squadron' and a fond hello to a great fencing partner, John the OFM |

Pete Melvin | 05 Mar 2014 3:21 a.m. PST |
Well KK, it seems you have picked up another one for that comment. Some people seem to do it through sheer bloody mindedness than any actual offense. Takes all sorts I suppose. |
Mac1638 | 05 Mar 2014 6:23 a.m. PST |
I joined TMP last October and looked at may profile and wondered what the kcuf is a "Stifles"? After reading this thread I am still no wiser! |

I have stifled no one
all it does is take away a different point of view, regardless of how much you disagree
