Hi chaps, could anyone suggest a source of information for the uniforms of the nine years war. Also does anyone know if there is a producer of 15mm flags for this period. Thanks in advance for any info, all the best…CH.

I think your best source is the League of Augsburg website and forum.

Sorry, no link, but Google will help you.

Michael McNally's Osprey book on the Boyne has some details of Williamite and Jacobite forces. There is also an Osprey on army of Louis XIV. I bought a couple of little pamphlets by Sapherson from Caliver books and I managed to get hold of a copy of Charles Grants " from Pike to Shot", which covers uniforms and battles of this period. I have also downloaded a couple of PDFs on Danish army of late 17th century:

I have also found following links useful:

I got some nice flags from Tiny Tin Troops as well, he does them in 15 mm. Just about to start painting 400 Pendraken figures, hence the links and research.

Hi Dave, thanks very much for replying with some great information. What do you think to the Pendraken figures, I have ordered a few packs to see what they are like but they have not arrived as yet. I haven't really decided on a scale yet and am considering Essex 15's the beautiful 28's from Warfare miniature's and Pendraken. I am really hoping that the Pendraken figures will be nice as I am a extremely slow painter and the larger the scale the slower I get. Also what rules are you going to use to game the period. Thanks again for your great info, all the best…CH.

Front Rank has some lovely 28mm figs for the period, and you can find some useful chaps in their extensive WSS ranges – certainly among the non-tricorn types like helmeted cavalry, fur-hatted dragoons, grenadiers etc.

Here's my Nine Years War armies using 10mm Pendraken.

I think Pendraken may have redone the range so it should be even better now.

Hi Catherder. I really like the new range of Pendraken figures for this period. The cavalry are particularly good, the horses are no longer squat little ponies. There is also some variation within each code, so units will look a little more animated.
Not yet decided on rules, but I think I may look at modifying Last Twilight Of The Sunking. We have used these for large WSS games and they work well. They would just need a little tweak to take account of the greater significance of pike and perhaps the greater preponderance of matchlocks. The mechanisms are a bit unusual, but we find they give fast play games with the larger battles.
I may also look at Warlord Games "Pike and Shotte", which goes through to the Nine Years War. Don't have "Under the Lily Banners", although I have read good reviews of it. I also have a free set called "Lillibulero", although never played it. Final choice will probably come down to what I can persuade others in the club to play with.
Given the nature of warfare in this period, may also need to look at some siege rules, as there were only a few open field battles.
I am hoping it will prove to be a very colourful period to game. I intend to start with the Williamite Wars, so am starting off with Dutch, Danish and the various Jacobite forces, but, given enough time, will build up armies so I can game Fleurus, Steenkerque etc.
I can see the attraction of 28 mm for this period, there are some beautiful ranges out there, but I am, like you, a slow painter-I am just finishing off a 16 figure 28mm ECW infantry unit which has been on the painting bench for nearly three weeks! ( and, just to add to the pressure, it's needed for a display game next week). I find I can pretty well do a 10 mm unit of the same size in a couple of 2 hour sessions, so, as I want big armies for this period, it has to be 10mm. 6mm just too small to get the uniform details I want to show.
Good luck with your project.

Hi Catherder

I have painted many of the old Pendraken LoA range and quite a few of the new ones too. The new range is superb and the range of poses and animation equals most 15mm.

In the process of completing a large commission on the period I have produced a fair few flags but only the ones for the War in Ireland (but most of the French range will fit the earlier period as well as the 7YW) have been published so far. I will get to the rest in time but they are just 'bits' at the moment with only flags done for regiments I painted for clients – and some of those are a bit 'conjectural' and need more research (which I need to find time to do – where from I don't know though).

I'll try and get some of the new figure pictures up on my website soon. I have been very remiss in keeping that up to date.

Hi Catherder

If use wish to do 15mm Essex are nice and easy to paint, I have used them for my Williamites,
I have used Irregular 15mm for my Jacobites, a very nice and surprisingly nice range from Irregular.

I have been using DBR and FOG-R they are OK and give a good one off game (you can play to points).

Sorry I always think of the one in Ireland

Hi lads, excellent feed back, thanks very much. After much thought I have decided to go with Pendraken and Flags from Gildas. I have more chance of persuading my long suffering regular opponent to collect an opposing force if I go with 10mm, the figures look nice and Gildas's flags were the deal breaker. Gildas I was wondering if you have any plans to expand your Huguenot range, if you look on the LOA website they do a set for the Regiments DuCambon, LeCaillemotte & de Meloniere, these are superb, any chance of some in 10mm. Mac I have thousands of Essex figures and they are my favorite manufacturer, but I get peed off with their telegraph pole armed pike men. Anyway enough of my drivel, thanks again to all for your time and extremely helpful feed back, all the best…CH.

Hi CatHerder

The 10 & 12mm sets I do contain flags for the 3 Huguenot regiments you note. AFAIK the exact design of the flags is unknown so my interpretation is as valid/invalid as the LoA one – in fact the inspiration for mine came from a devotee of the period who has many period flags on his website (I think it is titled 'don't throw a 1').

Rules another set to look at is the Impetus add on called Basic Baroque and something Sun King I like the idea of complete or max 3 elements for a unit in the 10mm scale, just my ideas on it, I'm hoping to also get going using the Pendaken range for my foray into the Sun King period. Cheer and happy gaming

Take a look through my blog, Don't throw a 1, I've been building up an English, Jacobite and French armies for the NYW. I've also got loads of free flags available to download as well.

Hi Ray , thanks very much for those two links mate, they are excellent. Your painting makes the Essex range look a lot more tempting than the stuff on their web page, lovely job. The flags look excellent too, you should really consider selling them. Anyway thanks again, all the very best, Glen.
