In the course of my selling Comcast I have run across a few dinosaurs who were still on dialup. Not even DSL! So, who here is still in dialup for their internet access? Can you even view TMP on dialup? |

I know some people who are in the boonies whose choices were expensive satellite modems or dialup. Most now have the option of cheaper cellular internet now though. |

I've been on cable for quite a few years. It's shortly going to be upgraded from 20MB to 100MB. Eat your heart out! |

Haven't been on dialup in a long, long time (probably not since the late '90s) Damon. |

dialup for their internet access? Ha, ha. Very, very good. I must use that line myself one day. So good. I don't really know what it means but I guess it means using a sundial to receive the internet. Priceless. Thanks John the OFM. |

I still have an acoustic coupler from when I used to network in the UK. I think it had two speeds
300 baud, and super fast 1200 |

I know some people who are in the boonies whose choices were expensive satellite modems or dialup. Our case here, was only able to move off dial-up for first time in late 2102 by going to limited, expensive satellite. We are just far enough off the main "trails" down the San Joaquin Valley in eastern California for all line-delivered high speed to stop about four miles from us. Families per square mile dictates development. Advised by AT&T, and an established regional DSL tower delivered ISP, that it will be decades before projected local population density approaches that (DSL), if then even
Not dinosaurs, nor Luddites, by choice

No, but when my kids put us over our bandwidth allocation for the month we get turned back to dial-up speed. It is slow! |

With web page designs today, I have no idea how anyone would even be able to open a page on dial up. |

I have DSL and it might as well be dail up. |

We were looking into houses in more 'rural' areas of Alberta recently and I was told that in certain areas all that was available was dial-up
these houses were less than 30miles west of Edmonton could this be actually true? |

Dialup speeds aren't hugely slower than 2G broadband, so apps and mobile webpages would work OK. I can't imagine trying to run a standard modern page loaded down with javascript and Flash though. |

Dialup
only as a last resort, and then reluctantly. There are six 'puters in our house. Three have cable access (two on the same service, one on a separate service 'just in case') and one has a 'phone connection which can be activated if weather or other 'things' interfere. T'others are stand-alone machines, one for gaming and one to create stuff (text, spreadsheets, etc). The dial-up machine, when active, is sloooooooooow

I'm only an hour west of John the OFM and I was on dial-up until about five years ago. There still isn't any cell phone service within 8 miles of my house. |

I live in the boonies and the only choice I have is an aircard sim card with ever so slow internet connection, 1GB of 3G for £6.00 GBP a month after which it reverts to dial up speed, or satellite which is horrendously expensive at £60.00 GBP a month with a download speed on 1MGb, but it is unlimited, LOL. I can't even watch You Tube as it is too slow. 3G wifi is 6 Kilometers away, so one day I may get some decent internet speeds. |

Not anymore, but I was up til early 2008. I do still have and use my flip-phone from that same year, however. In ten years or less, it's going to be so retro-cool that hipsters will be buying imitations and my "vintage" model will fetch scads of dough on ebay. I'm convinced of this. If it had a DIAL, it'd be perfect. |

Last time I had to use dial up was 1999 or so and it was unusable even then. |
Cheriton | 26 Feb 2014 8:23 a.m. PST |
Last time I had to use dial up was 1999 or so and it was unusable even then. We were stuck with dial-up for 22 years, 1990-2012. I wonder if that is some sort of totally undesirable record? Cheers, |

only when I'm out at the farm no cable out there its 3 miles from the road and the cable company wants $8,000.00 USD to run a line. :( one house is not worth 3 miles of wire. But the power and phone companies ran lines back in the 1940s with no problem at all and keep them repaired. |

My sister and my mom are still on dial up
.ISP is Walmart connect
with a speed of 33 KBPS, on dial up on an underground copper cable
. And just "WHAT" is wrong with DSL?

We just moved my mother-in-law off dial up. She only uses the computer to read e-mail from her kids. Attached pictures of grandchildren were taking absurd amounts of time to download. She was reluctant to change (change is a four letter word for her) but now she is happy. |

I am only on dial-up because of limited income. If I need large downloads, I use the public library computers. |
Brian Smaller | 27 Feb 2014 4:03 p.m. PST |
Where the Woolshed is it was dial-up or satellite until a couple of years ago when we got a cellular internet service. It is pretty quick, all things considered. |

Didn't mean to denigrate anyone. If I did I sincerely apologize. I was looking at it from the perspective of High speed access being available and having the resources to get it. My hat's off to anyone who has persevered with dial up for whatever the reason. Sometimes we think our family would be better of with less convenient access. DM |
