I've got Warlord's Black Powder rulebook and Last Arguement of Kings in my Amazon shopping cart. I would like to do F&I and AWI skirmish battles concentrating on the area near me in the Lake Champlain valley, Adirondacks, VT and Quebec. Firstly, are these rules a bit of overkill for skirmish? Secondly, I like the look of the Perry plastic AWI miniatures (I like plastics/resin more than metal), but if I buy those, will they be undersized when compared to some other lines (like Warlord or Redoubt or others)? I'd like suggestions of nice looking minis of rangers, native americans, French and British soldiers mostly. Thank you, Bill |

I feel Black Powder is more for large battles (that's all we use it for anyway), not sure about LAoK. We use Muskets and Tomahawks for our F&I and AWI skirmish games. |

Hello cptsafety2, Muskets and Tomahawks seem to be a really popular set of rules right now. If your going to be at Cold Wars, Tom Keegan will be putting on a game Saturday at 6:00PM with these rules. We(Loyalhanna Outpost) will also be in the dealer area with our range of FIW figures. If you are not going to Cold Wars, check out our website at the link below. We carry a very nice range of FIW miniatures. take care, Keith loyalhannaoutpost.com |

After looking at the rules sets, I think you guys are right. For skirmishes, it looks like M&T is the way to go – and the reviews in several places are really good. What do you all think of the different miniature ranges? The minis on your site, Keith look good and I'll probably start there. |

Where are you located Bill? I'm in VT and am a FIW fan. Great period, I have M&T and Sharpe Practice for rules. Tried this very ground, but didn't like it much, though it has a neat firing mechanism. |

Muskets and Tomahawks gets my vote for F&IW (or AWI) skirmish I have Perry metal indians mixed with my Redout ones and they look OK together Big Scale – Redoubt, Perry, Galloping Major AW and Front Rsnk Small Scale – Old Glory, Dixon Medium or Mixed (variable) – Warlord – Conquest Not sure about Crusader or Over the Mountain men Tall Scale (but more 'realstic') Minden , Blue Moon |

Another possibility is several of the products from Two Hour Wargames: link |

If you aren't absolutely sold on the larger scale then you must look into Blue Moon's 15/18 mm range for this period. Hard to beat – and tremendous variety. And you get a magically "larger" table to play on! |

If you still have any thoughts on using Black Powder LaOK, have you seen the alternative Quebec scenario. The authors essentially added some more FIW content to the rules online. While it focuses on the Plains of Abraham, it gives interesting battle stats for a wide variety of FIW units. link |
