I'm painting some BlueMoon Russian infantry and I have a couple of questions. On some of the Shakos instead of a cord running across the front and a round pompom in the top front, the cords loop up to the top and seem to end in two pompoms. I haven't seen any pictures of this, so I'm not sure what it's supposed to be. Also, on the tails of the officers coats, there appear to be pockets or some sort of ornament. Does anybody know what this is supposed to look like? Thanks. |

That sounds like the flounders on the end of shako cords. As the name suggests, these are much flatter than pompoms, and serve to prevent the cord running through any loops. Russians used to hike the cords over and around the pompom to keep 'em out the way. Like the bloke on the left? If so just paint them white

For officers' uniform coats
. The image here is of engineering officers, but the construction was the same for infantry.
(This was the highest definition contemporary image I could come up with quickly. If it is not good enough, please let me know and I will look some more.) The decoration, often obscured by the sash, is a pocket flap with three buttons near the top of each tail, plus two buttons at the top of the turnbacks in the center of the back. Also, here is a pretty good image of the shako cords :
