I got some of the beautiful Perry Anhalt models and since I have had trouble with undercoat sticking to metal miniatures before so I washed them in warm soapy water (which I have not done before). I am not sure if they were dry but I'd left them drying for a good 45 minutes and went to spray them. The paint would only stick to a few recesses despite vast quantities of spray primer. I washed them again to try and remove the small areas of paint and then left them to dry again for about the same time but on a radiator this time. However still no luck when I go to spray them again, any tips? |

I have never run into this problem. However, when I wash resin items, I let them dry overnight before spraying them. You might try that. I assume you are rinsing them well, although you did not say that. If not, they may have a soap residue that is causing the problem. Good luck. Tom |

Get a very dilute detergent on them, a drop of washing up liquid in the sink will do it. Give them a gentle clean with a soft toothbrush, rinse them with clean water and gently towel dry then either leave them over night or hit them with a hair-dryer. |

Or could it be a problem with the can of spray primer that you're using? |

Hmmn, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone bathing metal figures before. I thought that was only needed with plastics. |

Sounds like a bad can of paint. DM |

Are you spaying outside, and if so is it cold? Primers don't work well in low temperatures. |

Its the paint. Surfactants like soap are oil neutral and would not cause this problem. |

I want the maximum possible adhesion of undercoat to figure, so I always wash my metals in a weak detergent/warm water solution before painting. They've been handled, so at the very least there'll be oil on them, along with whatever dirt has accumulated before they reached me.The thought of all that filth being trapped under the paint would cause me too many sleepless nights. Drying is simply a matter of rolling them around on a towel to remove most of the water, then leaving them overnight to finish the job. |
