Does anybody know who makes good flames for fires like on sacrificial altars or braziers or open pits? ArmorCast of Ohio makes stuff that is intended for coming out of guns or flame throwers. Is there other stuff available that works well and paints to look realistic?

I like GF9's fire markers

There's also those cheap electric tea lights, which flicker realistically. Really adds to the ambiance.

little more expensive than the tea lights
but might be worth it

thanks to all for the suggestions. I have ordered some of the Reaper flames for some spot fire. I am really intrigued by the lights that TNE linked to. Has anyone used them and how would you rate the ease of their use?

I may have to drill into my existing frame and work but I am thinking of a way to maximize the effect.

As a side note, you can probably get a flickering LED and insert it into the bottom of those Reaper flames…

You will probably need to cut the electric tea lights up to free the electronics from the fake candle.

after I really looked at the Reaper flames I decided NO. they are flat and not at all realistic. I want realism short of an actual fire.

This may prove useful: Link to Tutorial on making flame markers of various sizes. They are simple, and easy to make, as well as inexpensive. You can make whatever size, and shape needed. Cheers!

Gideon, try the Reaper Bones fire elementals. Those are not very "flat," and are cast in a red-orange plastic that will hugely benefit from a light in the bottom!

The Loc-Tite company. This is their waterproof sealant in action…

Also, for smaller bits, the Saran Wrap people make some good stuff …

Thanks to all for the suggestions. saran wrap and magic markers??? Who woulda thunk it!!!

Lion – by a strange coincidence I had just picked up one of the Reaper elementals and was painted it just this morning. I think it is going to do a fine job.

Sgt – thanks for the tutorial link.

This is all shaping up quite nicely.

I really love this place and all the help its been to me.

I use cotton glued onto those fake cake candles…see pics. And spray some black on top of the white cotton for darker smoke. Works great. The candles actually flash slowly so gives off a burning/exploding look. Cool when you have like 20 of them across the table.
