What is the best way to go about building up Tattoine from the star wars universe? Does anyone sell suitable buildings for this? I suppose middle eastern style buildings, with modifications, would be best. I need ones that you can play on with that can handle 25mm bases. They have to have removable tops.

Any ideas?

Thanks

See Major General Tremorden Rederring's Colonial Wargames page for instructions on how to build simple (and not so simple) desert style buildings.

URL is zeitcom.com/majgen/30str.html for the particular page that discusses building buildings.

Use playground sand to make molds for plaster buildings.

Wet a bucket of sand so that it absorbs no more water, but still holds its shape. Take warious sized blocks, tubs and balls and impress into sand.

For example, press a margarine tub into the sand to create a round base impression, then press a softball into the middle to create a dome. Fill cavity with plaster of paris, or similiar. Let harden and remove. Knock off excess sand.

This should allow you to create the rounded buildings that differentiate Tatooine from Baghdad. The buildings do have a rough texture, but can be sanded smooth if desired.

We used to do these back in our Rogue Trader days- in fact I think the Rogue Trader rulebook has this tachnique in the modelling section.

If I recall most of the building from tha set were very similar to many of the computer component trays that often get tossed. Basically a rambling rectangle with rib like column running up the side. See if you have any modem or vedeo card boxes laying around with plastic inserts that are tall enough. Put on a card door or two and flock with sand. You could build tons for next to nothing and for once the odd package shapes would come in handy.

I think if you want removable tops you may want to build your own. For bases I would use 1/8" fiber board. I would use foamcore/foamboard for walls. You can cut arched doorways and windows with an Xacto knife. Make the recessed flat roof sit on horizontal foam card rails inside the wall perimeter so it can be lifted out. For domes use foam hemispheres or cut a plastic sphere in half and mount on the roof. Towers can be made from water bottles or used food containers.

Use an indoor flat latex house paint and mix in paint texture material or sand. The house paint will not eat the foam edges of the walls. You could also use spackle on the edges but it is an extra step. I would recommend brown as the base/primer and a drybrushing of a sand or tan color.

Monolith do a range called Space Port or some such which just happens to be a collection of small Tatooine type dwellings...

Here at the Miniature Building Authority, we offer several buildings in our Mideastern Series that would fit your needs very nicely. Ask at your local game shop or visit us at:

Wouldn't that be Chekhov from Star Trek, with his "Nuclear Wessels"?

Thanks for all the help. The "Major General Tremorden Rederring's" page is quite useful for structural considerations and technique. The sand and plaster method is also interesting. Since it is still warm enough here to do such I might contemplate using that method to do the roofs. I will also check out the dollar stores and hobby shops for more ideas and odd shaped items.

I saw a hand made Death Star setup but can't find the url anymore. If I find it I will send it along!

There are convention photos some where on the web where the attendees were asked to help build tatooine in miniature.
I dont have the link off hand, sorry.
(I'll try to post it tomorrow if I can find it.)

Anybody have pics from that big eBay auction? It was pretty simple and very nice.

Ertl or some other company did a Jabba's Palace model playset. The figures (poorly sculpted) are only a tad smaller than the WotC prepaints.

I've gamed Tatooine several times, using the white foam inserts from VCR boxes and the like.

Add a little foam core and some paint, and you'll be amazed.

Also add imagination...

Some ideas on this TMP message board thread:

I've got about 8 buildings partially built using these suggestions and they're looking pretty good. I'll post pics when they're finished.
