Great, many thanks Druzhina! Nunó Sanç is the guy in the middle. His shiend bore gules pales on a gold field, with an argent bordure charged with sable boilers (the bordure lets only the center two pales to be seen). It seems that he's riding besides Gilabert III de Cruïlles (argent crosses on a gules field), Berenguer de Palou, bishop of Barcelona (the mitre helm)and the king Jaume I himself (whose horse bears his arms of gules pales on a gold field). The soldiers look like the nobles' mainades (Catalan for -armed- retinues), judging from the heraldry on some helmets, although they could be almogàvers too (who were armed both with javelins and crossbows). Nice find. |

Yes the one with the gold bezants on gules field, with two bulls on the chief, is from the Montcada, Guillem as it states, viscount of Bearn (the bulls from Bearn, the bezants from the Montcada family). The other I think he is Guillem de Mediona (William of Mediona), famous for being the best jousting knight in Catalonia; he was with William of Montcada when the moors killed the latter, and managed to escape with serious injury to his head and face (a stone thrown to his mouth as the chronicle tells). The chief of his shield shows the arms of the varvassors of Mediona (varvassors were vassals of vassals), but the red part would mean he was not the varvassor himself. The info comes from here, although it is in Catalan: link In the other scene, that of the camp, on the left tent there are the Count Hug IV of Empúries (gules on gold, although it seems argent because of decoloration), talking to Pero Maça, and the king with the bishop of Barcelona Berenguer de Palou, Nunó Sanç, Gilabert de Cruïlles and Bernat III de Centelles (with the gules/gold diamonds). Cheers! |
