The Editor tries out a boardgame - yes, a boardgame - from battle-market magazine.

I was wondering…
I like Heart of Oak for ship battles but are there any rules that focus down on the detailed operation of a single ship during combat?
I'm thinking something like the Star Fleet Battles game for Star Trek… but not nearly that complex.
Mostly I'm after the flavor of how a crew operated, maybe with stats for various officers and such.

I'm generally ignorant of this topic so pardon any gross violations of common sense.
Thanks for any suggestions.

'Privateers': rules found in an issue of the Courier, found in Wargames vault as a PDF (sorry, can't be more specific, but it can be searched). It has unrated ships from about 28 guns and less.

'Boarders Away' by Jeff Knudsen. Found for free on his website; War Artisan. Covers naval actions on the Great Lakes.

'Letters of Marque' …can't think of any more details off the top of my head. but these should keep you going.

Oh… and 'Beat to Quarters' by Barry Fox. Quite detailed ship-to-ship actions. Published in the early 1980s, it might be hard to find now, but worth tracking down.

The free download of Beat to Quarters is NOT the same game by Barry Fox. Different game altogether by a different author.

Thanks for that info. I had no idea. Then I would like to see the Barry Fox Rules.

Barry's rules were published by Command Perspectives back in 1979-80 (IIRC) and have been looooong OOP. Last time I saw them was on ebay (and that was over 10 years ago).

To Glory We Steer.

You can play as a captain or a commodore. 1 to 3 Ships per player.

It has an interactive damage model and the orders you give are to the crew, making best use of a Ships strengths will win the game.

Its also free if that helps.

Sailpower is another game where you need to assign the crew to do various things.

Sails of Glory if you use the advanced rules and have to assign crew to stuff.

Clear for Action computer set.

You assign crew to each gun battery or mast and control each sail individually.

Superb for single ship and squadron actions – bit of a handful when you get to Trafalgar but still doable for the big fleet actions if you have the time.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm gonna have to look further into each of these.
To Glory We Steer and and Sailpower both sound fun. Sailpower in particular, from what I've seen on the Youtube vids, seems to have the sort of quasi-RPG feel I like.

Sails of Glory looks kinda fun… easy to get up and going with… but lots of proprietary bits. Not much DIY.

Gunboat looks like something different than I was thinking but very interesting focus just the same. It's on my want list.

There's a copy of Beat To Quarters for sale on BGG but it's a bit pricey for my present level of dedication.

Thanks again!
