I have just received a big bunch of painted pirates from an old friend. I also have a heap of unpainted pirate lead and a number of ships. What are people's opinions on the various rule sets available for Pirate skirmish or wargaming? I have a copy of the Warhammer Pirates game and 'The Sword in the Carribean' variant of TSATF rules. Are there others that people use? Cheers Brian |

I played a game at Southern Front a couple years back based on "Once Upon a Time in the West Country" Pretty fun and simple little set of rules. Partizan Press published them I think. Blood and Swash/Thunder and Plunder is a good set. The first part is a more detailed game with hit points. The second part plays similar to GASLIGHT and can handle many more figures. |

I've been disappointment by the various rule sets I've tried myself. Osprey is coming out with a set this summer: link This thread also has a number of ideas. TMP link Steve |

Thanks for that link Steve. I really like The Rules with No Name for Wild West skirmish and was thinking that a card activated version of that for pirates would be feasible. Throw in some simple rules for ship movement and so forth. |

Scott Bowman (whom you know, Brian) and myself have played 'Legends of the High Seas'. Recently Scott played a pirate game with his son. He talks a bit about the rules there, and suggests that 'Empire of the Dead' could, with some tinkering, work really well for pirates. Have a look at what he said on his blog at: link

More thanks. And more reading. I was also thinking that I could use a role playing game for rules – something like Savage Worlds would do it for smaller scale skirmish games. Lots of thinking to do
.but first lots of painting. |

There's a Savage Worlds: Pirates of the Spanish Main rulebook, it has everything needed to run a campaign and includes rules for small heroic skirmishes, larger engagements, ship-to-ship combat, Land Exploration, and optionally ties in with the PotSM Constructible Strategy Game by Wizkids. I have taken a look at it and I liked what I saw, especially since it's all contained in one book and the Savage Worlds rules are popular amongst miniature gamers for their easy of use. |

There are tons of pirate rules out there, with more on the way. What you'll need to do is narrow down to what type(s) of games you desire with the troops, vessels, etc., e.g. RPG-type game, 1 – 6 pirates, 10 – 15, 20 – 30, 31+, etc., since some of them are only appropriate for one, or two of the above. Some include rules for naval battles and boarding actions, and some do not (surprisingly for the pirate era). If you check out the message archives, under "Pirate Rules" you'll see lots of recommendations for various sized battles, and/or game mechanics. |

Muskets & Tomahawks are designed for French & Indian Wars skirmishes, but they work well for Pirate games. There are some example games over on the Studio Tomahawk forum. |

Agree it depends on what you want the rules to do. I play skirmish games and want my pirates to be dashing but not super heros. I have tried Sharp Practice, Bottle of Rum and Donnybrook and Donnybrook is the best of the lot. Platoonforward.blogspot.com 1 and 2 posts back for pirates. Good Luck--Pirates are fun! Joe |

I was also thinking that I could use a role playing game for rules For skirmish on land, my rules « Argad ! » are role-playing minded
although the updated english translation of the full basic rules is not entirely finished, I hope it will be soon. You can have a taste here: argad-bzh.fr/argad/en.html |
