Like the look of these but must be missing something in firing. The examples show fire being split (ie an mg fires area fire at two different targets spread apart on the table). Where is this mechanism explained please?

Many thanks

I don't have the rules to hand but iirc, it is described at the start of the rules in the "Orders" section under "Fire". Remember, a unit can fire twice and at two different targets in an activation if it doesn't move. In your example, the MG team's order would be to fire at target A with area fire and then fire at target B with area or direct fire. Doesn't have to be the same, iirc. You must nominate your targets and mode of fire before rolling any dice.

Hope that helps.

I had the same question. Went to the Guild website---I can't put the address cause work won't let me (!@*&), but it has a lot of answers on various questions.

I, too, like the look of these rules, and hope to play soon.

Ok, Al, that makes sense, so I can run with that. So one more. If pinning fire, can all units do it – so an infantry squad will roll lots of dice based on their RoF to attempt to pin, or can only certain weapons try for it?

Pz – the guild?

Marc – I am sure pzIV means this:

Any unit can use Area Fire to pin targets, the success rate is based on the units firepower and the target type.

More firepower, easier it is to pin down certain targets.

And yes, Guild has lots of answer… mysekf and Warwick are on there most days, and queries rarely take more than an hour or two to get answered.

@Marc: Area fire (attempt to pin) is conducted by the unit, whether an MG section or rifle section. Total the ROF for the unit and roll one die. For example, a German rifle section has a ROF of 5 (1 for each of the 5 riflemen in the section, assuming no SMGs). Cross reference the ROF on the Area fire table and that will give the score needed on 1D6 to pin. As Piers says, the higher the ROF the more likely the pin.

And of course the target unit if hit on the pinning die will then get their save according to what cover they are occupying.
