An odd question:

Are there any rules for WWII tanks with only a few tanks on either side? I am hoping for something sort of like Warmachine or Attack Wing, where you only need a small number of tanks per player.

It's a board game but I would recomend Tank on Tank.

or maybe Tank Charts a miniature game, I have not played in a very long time, not sure it's still available.

The first edition of Twilight 2000 and supplements for it.

Advanced Squad Leader, the tank rules in that go down into the nitty gritty and a handful per player would be plenty. It is a board game though.

How about Tank Combat from Zvezda. It's a stand alone expansion for their Art of Tactic WWII system.

NUTS! represents each crewman as a character. As with any set there is no reason you have to use infantry and other arms if you do not want to.

Donald Fatherstone's series of tank warfare game books are useful too. Available from the History of Wargaming Project. They allow for glancing hits, crew casualties, pass trhoughs, and all that sort of thing.

The Advanced Tobruk series of boardgames have excellent armour rules with vehicles rated for armour thickness in nine areas.

There is another set of miniatures rules…whose name escapes me but someone else might remember based on this. The publisher has a series of skirmish scenario books as well as rules for WWII and modern. The WWII rules come in two books one for the rules and one for the vehicle data. Hyper detailed and might be what you are looking for,

Mein Panzer from ODGW would work. Base rules are in one book, data for each war in another (they have data sets for WW1, WW2, SCW, and Korea).

Would love to know more about Tank Combat: has anyone played it?

Will look into those other reccomendations.

I actually like the way the Axis & Allies miniatures rules handle tank v. tank combat. They are simple, fast, and are pretty accurate when it comes to tank specs.
