The JU87 remained in service throughout the war and there were plenty of them at Stalingrad.. It was very effective as long as Germany maintained air superiority. |

I think Rudel only swapped to ground attack FW190's near the end of the war. It was a good plane for its day the Ju87 but hoplessly outclassed when faced with any fighter opposition. |

The Soviets also had lots of I-153's and I-16's flying at Stalingrad, even though they were obsolete when the war started. This was because they belonged to the Air Defense sector, and not Frontal Aviation. The front moved forward to Stalingrad, and what started as rear area air defense, became front line aviation. Hence the surprisingly obsolete aircraft flying on the Soviet side. |
