We tend to measure wheeling in straight lines which is a bit of a short-cut. In the process of making some wheeling templates for Irregular Wars: Conflict at the World's End, I decided to check the maths.

Maths is not my strongpoint so please shoot me down if I've miscalculated.

Interesting – although I'm not sure that you need to be so precise. If I understand well, your calculation considers that unit width is does not change (because miniatures bases do not change width).

I took part in some 19th century re-enactments and when your unit wheel, it must stay in close order; it is much more difficult to turn together than to walk straight; you must keep an eye (or both eyes, depending on period regulations) on the end of the line to keep an even line, and at the same time you walk, so you tend to come closer to your pal in the line (and even grapping the guy next you with your free hand). Perhaps the line width shortens a tiny bit during the move? It is probably not significant.

That's an interesting perspective, though not one we need to simulate!

Possibly more relevant to wargaming is the question of whether you slowed down in comparison to more direct forward movement.
