I bought a box of GF9 Asteroids for my SW:X-Wing games. Here are some pictures for size.

erm….not to be 'picky'….but I've made some of my own, fairly un-expensively, from lava rock, with flat-ish grey and given a black 'wash'….

I've also found some 'naturally occuring' rocks just like those in old driveways….that cost nothing more than picking up and mounting some on old 'flying stands'.

Of course…they are 'ROCK'…so they are heavier, some cleaning required….etc….but to each their own!

I've used sponges for my asteroids, soak them in black paint, squeeze and leave to dry. Then tear into chunks, pluck out craters and then dust with grey and white primer.

Not only are they light and easy to store, they are virtually indestructible.

Saying that ,the GF9 ones look to be good too.

Yeah, I've also made lava rock ones, it's pretty easy and very inexpensive! A bit messy, though, as lava rock dust is extremely fine… better do it outside.

They look good, I saw them at a store yesterday. But at that price they could have included at least stands for ALL asteroids. That's just stingy. I'd rather make my own.

I had a similar reaction to Senor. For space games, I think it looks better if everything is on a stand, not touching the tabletop.

However I like the fact that the asteroids are not at the same level. If they are all on stands, you can imagine why do not go over or under them (so you need stands with various heights).

Another point is that the collisions (in teh SW:X-Wing game) are resolved when the base of the spaceship is in contact with another base or an asteroid.

@cpt shandy: And you have to live near a volcano. I have some samples of lava rocks and they are really fragile.

These are kind of pretty, but for most space games I play, asteroids really come in the form of asteroid fields, for which you can actually attempt to navigate through with your ship (might not be a good idea, but hey Han Solo did it). So for me these would not be very functional terrain.

We get bags of pumice stones (rock formed from volcanic ash – it's the "floating rock") at our local garden centre.

You can also use the rocks used in bbqs, which come in 5kg bags and sell here for about $10 USD-15.

Stands are cheap (GW aren't the only ones that make them (Fat boy games do some as well) so basing them is also not really an issue.
