@Serg Joe,

Sorry, your English was a bit tricky too follow on this one, but I take it you are asking people to only use miniatures of the 'correct' period for their Napoleonic battle reports? Line units in bicorne at Austerlitz, Line units in short-tailed jacket and shako at Waterloo etc. ?

Regards

I have early and late forces for most Nations , however for some large battles I have to use some early, such as Boridino when some Early Russian Cavalry and gunners make an appearance. If some spotter made a snide remark or tried to order me otherwise they would at worst receive a smack in the mouth at best just ignored!

Likewise if I put a photo up of a game then the same applies, however if I posted a photo saying this is an exact historical representation down to the Colonels hair colour I would expect it to be so! Luckily I wargame and don't make dioramas!

Nick, if you are ever short of the correct type of unit, just let me know, I can send you either red forces or blue forces….. :-)

Texas Jack08 Feb 2014 1:45 p.m. PST

Actually it isnīt a stupid topic joe. I am not a button counter, nor rivet counter for that matter, but I do think those shakos where they shouldnīt be really do stick out.

Other than that, that is as strict as I get. How about the rest of yīall?

Hello Joe, I am guessing your 28mm look really nice. Your post reminded me of a time when there used to be frequent outcries when people put unpainted figures on the table – something that we just don't see these days.

Texas Jack, I am pretty relaxed on how people choose to play their games, just doing it seems to be the important thing, wrong figures, unpainted lead and terrain of dubious origin have all been a part of my hobby over several decades, so there is almost a nostalgic charm when I see a game that reminds me of any of that.

My first trees were matchsticks in a plastercine base, with cotton wool for foliage, painted bright green with heavily thinned poster paint dabbed onto it. There was an innocence to that gaming, but one that was borne of there being precious little money in the household and I was a teenager. But i had a passion for the 'war game' and I sometimes wish I could recapture some of the naive spirit of those gaming days.

Problems with stil painting my horses to a good nice look grts ergjoe

Texas Jack08 Feb 2014 2:46 p.m. PST

normsmith, I am not far removed from the matchstick trees myself. In fact last year was the first time I actually fielded store bought trees (I still prefer my homemade ones though!). I donīt care about artillery, the wrong type of shako, or really anything else, but I just canīt do shakos in 1805. It kind of reminds me of watching The Battle of the Bulge with all those M-47s grin

All my Austrians have the earlier helmets on, theres no way that I will duplicate my collection just because in later years the Austrian infantry wore shakos. Sorry, life is too short. And of course the helmets are cooler.

I'm careful to use the correct colors when I spray paint my blue or white armies.

TelesticWarrior28 Mar 2014 5:37 a.m. PST

I'm not a button counter by any means but I do appreciate it if armies are in the correct colour and headgear (as these two things seem to be visually the most important at "wargaming distance").

I find that peoples attitudes change as they learn more about the subject. In the early days it wouldn't have bothered me at all if someone had painted up Suvarov's army in Kiwers, but now if I look at a Marengo wargame and the French are wearing shako's it does put me off a tiny bit.
I'd probably have a mild panic attack now if I saw an Austrian army in redcoats.
Is this a slippery downward path to becoming an old fart?…..•old fart

I just picked a period of napoleonics (1813) and I only fight that period with those figues. The only exception is my Wurttemburg. I can't find any 15mm figures with the double brimed shako's so I have to use the Wurttmeburs with helmets.

I don't even know what you call those double brimmed shakos to be honest.

Any other period of Napoleonic I will play in other gammers game with their figures. I really like 1813.

I believe that a lot of people's judgement should be conditional…

If a gamemaster is a middle-aged gentleman with an air of superiority declaring absolute historical accuracy while presenting the battle of Marengo in 1800 with Austrians and French in shakos then that is unacceptable.

However if a younger player without much money or minis is presenting the battle of Marengo with shakos because they can't afford many figs and are trying to represent for the widest period possible and are upfront with "they brought what they could afford"…then I believe we should give them a pass and not make a big issue out of it.

If a gamer is new to the hobby, presents as above and freely admit that they are new to the period and are open to comments and suggestions to improve the accuracy of their games, then I believe that they too should get a pass.

I strongly believe in getting the most accurate depiction possible and enjoy an obviously researched depiction, but think it is wise and prudent to give newer and younger gamers a pass as they learn more about the period.

Remember…you attract more with honey than with vinegar. As fellow gamers we need to encourage our newer and younger members so that they will become enthusiastic members and help our hobby grow and thrive.

And in the end isn't that the whole purpose of the exercise? To meet fellow enthusiasts, have a great time gaming and perhaps learn a new thing or two about history?

For a "Detail Freak" you think you would "police" your spelling better. English or not…

I play for fun and try to be as accurate as possible but if the miniatures are at least close, well then good enough for me. It really only seems the "Napoleonic Crowd" has these hang-ups. Why is that? I play "Colonial Anglo-Zulu" and have yet to run into anyone that would challenge the shade of red I used on the jackets. Even ACW period, though there are a fair share of button counters, really don't get as bunged up as "Nappies"…
