Hi All,

I have a modular dungeon set up that looks like this:

picture

What I would like to make up is a selection of -pull off the shelf- boxes that are, for want of a better term, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and so on. I want to do this so that I can throw together a quick dungeon crawl without having to sort through loads of boxes of "different" level critters.

Question is what would you put in these boxes?

eg Level 1-kobolds, goblins, beserkers, skeletons, zombies, giant beetles, spiders, bats, rats, and such like.

Level 2-orcs, hobgoblins, gnolls, wights, nastier monsters???

Can you guys help me reorganise my collection so I can have all the minis there in one place and draw them randomly?

I would, of course, want a boss figures for each level.

eg a hobgoblin on Level 1 to lead the goblins.

Just a bit of fun. Any suggestions or existing on-line resources to help.Thanks.

What would you put in your boxes?

It's a good idea, and I do something similar.
I have a card for each monster, and on each card are several sets of stats. Use the stat appropriate to the level you're on.
Sometimes the stats are different for the figure, and sometimes it's the number of figures deployed.
So a skeleton might be level one, and six skeletons might be level three or something.

Terrement beat me to it. Here's a link to the Heritage boxed sets at the Lost Minis Wiki: link

You could go for a Hobgoblin boss, but how about a goblin officer/sergeant, let the players find out his true abilities, when he starts to fight.

I'd pick your Big Boss (3rd level) monster, and then work down from there as to what lesser monsters might serve (or survive) in a dungeon with this being.

So if the third level Head Honcho is a lich, the submonsters would be other undead. If a dragon, various scavenger beasts (spiders, carrion crawlers, etc,) and maybe a tribe of servants (lizardmen or kobodls). If a sorcerer or evil wizard, various magical beings, constructs, or summoned critters. A giant might be supported by trolls, ogres, and humanoid tribes. I think you get the idea. It's simply what makes sense for each.

For a proper Monty Haul dungeon, one of the boxes should have 100 goats and a magic sword.

the old D&D prepaint figures came with stat cards for a scirmish game that assigned every monster a points value for the scirmish game, with the reverse side giving the 3.5 edition (and later 4th edition) stats for the monster.

This may be helpful for you link

It's a download link for all the statcards

I have a bajillion of the cards in hardcopy too

I think Parzival has the general idea of what you're looking for, unless you're expecting to mix different types of characters (eg kobolds with a vampire boss).

First separate the different bosses and sub-groups you want in a box, then further subdivide these into different level character baggies or something. You could even go so far as to divide them into random encounter bags (say, a 1st level bag containing 3 goblins, or a 2nd level bag that had 2 goblins and 2 orcs) that could be randomly chosen for each encounter.

Once you've got it thus sorted out, you can say "Ok…today we're going to have an adventure in the Troll Caves"…Simply pull out the box for that set and randomly choose a 1st level bag to start off with. Once you've hit second level, move to your 2nd level bags and so on…

Thanks guys,

All of your ideas appreciated. I think I'll get out my collection over the next week and see just what bosses I have. Then start to reorganise the boxes accordingly so I can set up themed dungeon crawls. Just to make things interesting I think I'll put a few randoms into the boxes.

eg another party of adventurers or a patrol of Drow, so that unexpected situations could arise.

Hmm. I know I have an Orcus to head my undead guys.

On an unrelated note, who makes your dungeon set-up? Or is it custom built? It looks nice!

Thanks Daryl,

It's home made from cork tile, old felt tip pen barrels and floor tiles.

The doors are made from cork that has been dremmelled for effect.
