I'm interested in reading more about the battle of Lansdowne and I was hoping the folks on here could help. I'm looking to get some primary sources or information about the battle…especially performance of the Royalist Cornish Pike. Anyone have any tips?

Brinton,

Try looking up the Battlefield Trust they run a UK Battlefield Resource Centre and list the Contemporary Accounts for Lansdowne.

I hope this is helpful,
Mac

For a wargamer's perspective, you might like Trebian's take on the battle WFGU/Lansdown

The Wroughton book seemed very good when I looked through it.

If you can try and get hold of the Battle of Lansdown by Peachey, S Paritzan Press probably the best publication on this battle – it used primary sources. Failing that try and get hold of Cornwall in the Great Civil War by Coate, M 1963, Battles & Generals of the Civil Wars by Rogers, H 1968. Both utilised primary sources the Coates book is very good.

Thanks so much everyone…I've got some reading to do. I found a list of contemporary accounts on the battlefield trust site that seem promising and the PDF is great. I'll look for the Peachey book and I've got Cornwall in the Great Civil War by Coate checked out right now and waiting for reading.

Thanks again!

Just a foot note. The Wroughton book was the one I used for the game Phil linked to above. I've driven around the area quite a few times, but never done the walk in the book.

Wroughton knows the area very well, as he lives down that way & taught history at a local school in Bath.

Brinton – There was an article many moons ago in Military Modelling with great table layout and forces and description of the battle – I will see if I can track it down for you!

Also very useful for order of battle purposes is 'Battles of Lansdown and Roundway Down' by Robert Morris published by Stuart Press see here link
