Hi,

It's been a long time since I graced the odiferous halls of a wargames show so it was a complete pleasure to be at Vapnartak on Sunday gone. There is an extensive report and a great deal of pics on my blog:

You can read all about my adventure and other exploits here on my Just Add Water Blog:

link

In order to whet the appetite one feels a few pics as a taster are needed:

Cheers,
Darrell.

Great report Darrell.

I hadn't realised my son had taken some photos for his Blog. Its a job i normally get to do but i was still sulking/hung over from the previous days shambles and he reckons some of the pics are a bit blurred, they seem ok to me, but they can be found here if anyone wants to take a look-

Lots of good looking games! Always good to see lots of reports from the other side of the pond.

Just curious, but why is it called Vapnartak? Nothing wrong with the name of course, just an odd sounding name for a convention to this Yank. Ours are usually just bad military play on words: Cold Wars (in the winter), Fall in (in the Fall-get it?).

Huscarle04 Feb 2014 2:37 p.m. PST

Great pictures, thanks for sharing thumbs up
Iron Ivan, Vapnartak is Norse for "weapon take" at a Viking meet i.e: you hand your weapons in. The convention is held at York which has a strong Viking legacy (a strong Roman one too for that matter).
It's one of those shows that I want to go to, but as I'm in the deep south, I haven't managed to commit myself to making the march north. It also conflicts with the rugby, and I was a tad hungover too after England snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Huscarle: Ah! That's cool. Thanks for the explanation. I like that name for a gaming event. Much better than our seasonal military puns. It doesn't roll off the tongue to this provincial speaker, but still cool.

Thanks for the comments guys. It was a real pleasure to actually be at a show after last years illness.

Glad you enjoyed our show guys. Hope to see you all next year. We have had our usual slagging off from the Society of Ancients soawargamesteam.blogspot.co.uk

It doesn't bother us, we maintain that we tried our best to accommodate their requests and believe the topic is closed but we don't go onto their site badmouthing them. If the guy dislikes us so much why not do us all a favour and simply don't come? I certainly don't think I'll be renewing my SOA subscription any time soon if that's the way they feel about us.

Thankfully everyone else seemed to have a great time so to all of you who did make the effort to visit the show, thank you on behalf of York Wargames Society.

Yesthatphil05 Feb 2014 5:13 p.m. PST

Apologies, AlanYork, if you mistook my opening remark: the Society of Ancients indeed does not support/attend the show _and it no longer gets an invitation – nor has it ever had any attempt at bridge-building from the host club (that I have been made aware of)…

Nevertheless, when invited by the Lance & Longbow Society to assist with their game, I was willing to do so and have covered both the game and the show. I hardly think that one line clarifying that SoA Shows North was not attending as a result of past problems (but that I had attended as part of the L&L) counts as our usual slagging off

Even so, it was not my intention to offend – so I clearly failed in that. Mea Culpa.

With regard to your personal involvement with the Society, I am sure nobody has intended to spoil that for you – indeed I am not aware that you were ever involved in the problem from which the bad feeling arose (nor, on it's side, indeed were any of the current SoA committee, for that matter)… but I will forward your comments in order that, should the Society lose any members over this, it will be clear how it happened …

As I say, no offence was intended – please consider my hand on offer.

That's fair enough Phil, no hard feelings. Please consider your hand shaken.
