I put on a Man o' War game last weekend for our local group. None of the players had played Man o' War previously. I think they had a good time.

Participants:

The Empire

Admiral Matthew – Empire Greatship and fleet commander
Long John Ron -- Empire Greatship commander
Commodore Wesley -- Empire Wargalley squadron commander
Commodore Jason -- Empire Wargalley squadron commander
Commodore Bob -- Empire Wolfship squadron commander

The Bretonnian Combined Fleet:

Admiral Tom -- Bretonnian Galleon and Corsair squadron commander, fleet commander
Commodore Carl -- commander, Bretonnian Buccaneer squadrons
Blackbeard Dave -- Priate wargalley squadron commander (allies)
Peg Leg Ray -- Priate wargalley squadron commander (allies)

I took a few photographs during play.

Nice looking fleets, and it's great to see MoW still being played.

Ditto to what jpattern2 said!

MoW still being played.

Oh it still being played.

It is just GW who decided that it was not worth it to make and sell the Miniatures.

GW thinks that their Fanboyz only want WFB & 40K.

So they dropped everything else like a rock.

GW has made many stupid decisions over the last 17 years and dropping their specialize games was a very big one.

Oh and so was going to Finecrap Resin and the new White Dwarf and the Weekly Warhammer Vision.

Oh and nice game dBerczerk.

Thank you, Gentlemen!

I don't always play fantasy naval games.

But when I do, I prefer Man o' War.

Man O' War; one of the best games every created IMO. Still have a ton of stuff myself. I did get rid of the Plague fleet stuff and Ork ships. Have Dwarves, Empire, Bretonnia, Dark Elves, Norse and some smattering of others. Can't see myself ever getting rid of these….

Thanks for the AAR. Keep them coming. Wasn't there a list of ships or some folks doing compatible ones for MoW?

If you visit the Files section of the Sea of Claws Yahoo group ( link ) we give lots of suggestions for compatible ships and terrain.

ancientsgamer -- I never got into the Plague fleet stuff either, or the Dark Elves. I bought and painted the Sea Monsters and Behemoths, but never seemed to enjoy them that much during a game.

My fleets include the Empire, Bretonnia, the Dwarves, the High Elves, Orcs, and Norsemen.

I was pleasantly surprised at how our local gaming group participants enjoyed this Man o' War game. Our group is almost exclusively oriented toward historical games: FIW, AWI, War of 1812, ACW, the Mexican Adventure, and the Spanish-American War in 25mm / 28mm; and WWII in 54mm.

I had nine players participate, and had the opportunity to get my Empire, Bretonian, and Pirate ships onto the tabletop. Almost didn't have enough "CREW" chits to man all the ships, and nearly ran out of "DAMAGE" chits by Turns 4 and 5.

I'm on the watch for extra ship templates, damage chits, crew chits, and blaze markers.

Every now and again someone has a "Sea of Blood" expansion set on eBay, but the prices they're asking are quite high.

Still though, I enjoyed putting on the game, and was gratified by the number of players who asked for a rematch later this year.

I need to dig out my old MoW fleets and give it a shot; only thing is the paper sails are looking pretty ragged now! Wish they'd gone with plastic. Loved my Bretonnians, Dwarves and High Elves, still got most of the Chaos, Skaven and Chaos Dwarf stuff in the boxes. Maybe I'll try and put on a game at my local club one of these days.

By all means, put on a game for your local group.

There's no better way to galvanize your enthusiasm for getting your ships into drydock and prepared for sea duty.

I do recommend a "playtest" before the game, to make sure you have all the ship templates, crew markers, etc. needed for the game.

Maybe even invite over a friend to help try out the rules before the big game -- go over the catapult, ramming attack, and critical hit procedures so that you're not having to look them up during the actual game.
