I am going to try a solo game of the Ancients rules from Practical Wargaming and have a question or two. 1) Phalanx seems to be a double line formation 2 bases by 2 bases where a line is actually 1 base deep and 4 wide. is that right? 2) There is verbiage saying that a phalanx is deadly to medium infantry but does not say how. You can read it in the "Specialists" section. I could not figure out the effect unless they are referring to Pike armed phalanx. Does anyone have an idea about this? Thanks, John |

My interpretations: 1) Correct. All photos in the book show phalanx as double rank or 2 x 2. 2) The advantage is that the rear, supporting stand can replace an eliminated front rank stand. Therefore, odds are in favor of a phalanx to defeat medium foot that is only one rank deep vs two. |

Did you find the game too bloody? Some of the numbers to damage are really high, especially in melee. |
