I'm thinking about a slight re-organisation of my ECW dragoons and have Waller's 'full regiment (24 figures) in my collection, both as mounted and dismounted troops.

In their dismounted form I have the colours/guidons amongst the firing line. However, to give me more flexibility and so that I can have these dragoons represent any unit and not just Wallers, I want to pull the flags out of the firing line. All this got me thinking about adding a couple of dragoon vingettes to the collection, horse holders, that kind of thing and then it dawned on me… I suspect the guidons weren't in the firing line but probably held back as a rally marker with the horses. Or not?

Any thoughts on this? I'm also now questioning if I really need mounted duplicates of the dismounted troops at all. Although I like the option since I'm now moving more towards smaller ECW scions away from the well know big set-piece actions that had previously been the focus of my attention, I thought I might need to have the mounted duplicates. In the large set piece games I've only ever used my dragoons in their dismounted role.

So how do you model and use your ECW dragoon units and do you have duplicates in their mounted form?

I have both mounted and dismounted figures.
And they both seem to get used a lot.

I have a couple "alternate" standard bearers when I want to change the unit's identity. But the idea of having the standard with the horse holder is a good one too.

Thanks, now I have more work to do…

Except when playing FoG-R I always have mounted and dismounted dragoons. They are especially useful in skirmish games.

I have both mounted and dismounted. For the dismounted dragoons I have the standard separate with the dismounted men plus a vignette of horseholders (see link

Interesting question Timmo, nothing comes to mind on what the guidons did though I'm afraid.

Meanwhile I came across this regarding a skirmish at Nantwich in 1643 while looking for wiki.bcw-project.org/start info (unsubtle plug!)

"The enemy cried, "Let us fly, for they have great ordnance." Captain Goldgay dismounted his dragooners, and turned his horses upon them, which brought them into confusion, and charged upon them very sore"

I must admit my dragoons have mounted cornets with the horse holders, though for my chosen rule set mounted and dismounted are part of the same unit;
