I am working on a model of a Hawker Fury (biplane) for a HotT army of HG Wells 1936 "Things to Come" movie, and am wondering if anyone knows for sure the color of the airplane depcited in the movie, or the letters on the top wing? The plane looks silver in the black and white version and is depicted as overall red in the colorized version. Since they used standard British army vehicles in standard 1930's finish I have to lean toward the silver finish. There are only two quick glimpses of the upper wing showing that there are letters there and not roundels. But neither view gives enough to show what the letters are – thus my question. There are red and blue roundels on the fuselage sides, but other than that I saw no military markings or a fin flash. I realize this may be data lost forever, but still thought I'd ask as you never really know what's out there. Thanks for any help! Terry |

I don't think there were even roundels on the fuselage sides – looks like it was this civilian registered Hawker Intermediate Fury trials aircraft: link YouTube link (When the pilot gets out at 9:31, you can just see the top of the SE on the fuselage side. The head-on shot at 8:55 shows enough of the top wing to confirm the registration letters.) Dom. |

I risk being labelled as an "airplane geek", but it looks like he was dogfighting against a Mew Gull!

Dom, Hmmm that does indeed look like the serial, and if you look in the next part (link below), as he is getting in the plane you can see what looks like the top of two digits in black. Then as he is taking off (around 1:40 or so) you will see what looks like the roundel. But it is not clear enough to be sure, and it may be letters, and it also looks like it might be the number 20???? Probably the safest bet would be to go with the G-ABSE. YouTube link Coelacanth, I would not call that being an airplane geek at all. I have heard that the "enemy" plane is a Percival Mew Gull, and your picture sure looks like it. Thanks for the picture. Thank you both! Terry |
