Dear All,
Following our intention to wargame the great anniversaries of the Napoleonic Wars, on Thursday the Wollongong Wargamers marked the 200th anniversary of the 1814 Defence of France campaign by playing the Battle of Champaubert. Alan has given an excellent batrep of the battle here: link And I have added some further ramblings about the scenario design and why I picked this battle here: link In short, a comparatively easy 1814 battle to do, give it a go!

Nice background and certainly not a "slug it out with a table crammed full of troops" type scenario! |

The downside of taking the photos for most of our battle reports is that I rarely appear in them – makes a change to see myself, even if it's in a non-report :) This was a fun battle, although I could have done with more space to manoeuvre my cavalry in, even if it was only to bluff the Russians into immobility. |

I noticed that the photo labeled 'And French Columns' advancing were at least three companies wide, much wider than attack column in fact the formation appears to a cross between line and attack column. I am not familiar with Black Powder but is this permitted, or this a local rule? By the way a superb report, figures and terrain. A pleasure to read and view, thanks. |

Thanks Iron Duke. Black Powder does not concern itself with how wide the attack column is 'so long as the column is at least as many men wide as it is deep'. Actually most of the images in the rule book for a French attack column have them 6 figures wide (files) and 6 ranks deep. However I personally prefer to arrange them in 9 files and 4 ranks, which fits in with the rules (
between 3 and 6 ranks deep) and to my mind gives a better visual representation of an attack column, which would have been wider than it was deep, since the average French Bn in column would have been about 60 men wide but only 9 men deep, excluding supernumeries. Black Powder does not fret too much about the minutiae of company formation details, assuming that the Company Commanders know more or less what they are about, but takes a more holistic view of these battles, hence its ability to run large games quickly. That is not to say that period authenticity is sacrificed, from the perspective of the overall outcome but it is worked out before the game through special rules selection and unit and troop stats. Needless to say with Black Powder the frontage of my columns works perfectly well with columns arranged more conventionally, as the size and footprint of a particular unit is nominated prior to the game, rather than assessed with rulers and slide rules! The convention is that only one unit engages another to each particular facing anyway, so such differences all come out in the wash
