I'm getting ready to finish up my army of 15mm snakemen from Lonegunmen Games(formally thanes games), and they got this kind of African vibe going for them.

So, any good references for a subtible stronghold for them? I don't nessacariy want them to be "evil" per say. That, and a He-Man style "Snake Mountain" seems a little too on the nose.

I don't have any specific ideas right off the bat, but I'd consider that Snakemen might have no legs and slither around on tasils, so there would probably be no stairs but ramps. If they can just curl up to sleep, their beds don't need as much room as as human one, and so on :)

Don't snakes generally live in the ground? So maybe a mountain side with lots and lots of holes. A few fortified entrances near the bottom with walls and gates around them. Then sheer cliff walls with holes for various stuff like defensive positions and domestic stuff towards to top with farms and live stock. Could make it a plateau with civilian stuff on top and military stations down the sides.

Like this one.

Make the holes really small so the snakes can get in but humanoid enemies will have trouble. Forces them to scale it or fight one on one down long snake holes with traps and stuff.

There are more snakes in a swamp.
I think I'd go for more of a jungle terrain than a desert.

Stick with the African vibe and give them an Egyptian style temple or castle? Something like this: stores.castlekits.com/-strse-41/Egyptian-Pylon-Temple-Kit/Detail.bok

I like all three suggestions – how about combining two or more:

Pylon style temple located in a swamp… (maybe too close to the not-Mayan lizardmen a certain company makes, but whatever, could still be fun).

Big darn rock outcropping with many holes, in a swamp.

OR enormous pylon-style temple the size of a rock outcropping/mountain, with many holes.

OR an enormous pylon-style temple thingy with many holes… in a swamp.

To go off on another tangent – if you wanted to keep with the African theme, you could draw some inspiration from the ruins of Great Zimabwe.

Do a google search, some of those ruins look almost like snakes should have built them….

Try googling "butabu adobe architecture of west africa"

personnaly I would go with something along the lines of the black, white and red painted buildings in the middle picture, but that's cause I did the shields on my snakes in a similar vibe :-))

Btw. be sure to post some pictures of your snakemen when they are finished.

Giant Termite mound looking thing?

Maybe low tunnels connecting larger rooms.

Don't forget flat roof areas where they can lay about in the sun.

Snakes can slither up slender trees and such, so maybe something with a tall pole for an entrance that is flanked by guard platforms. Difficult for humans/humanoids to climb and with guard platforms, could easily be defended. If it's truly a defensive structure, I wouldn't put any openings near the ground where the nasty legged-folks could exploit them.

The vampire hive in the movie "Priest" would be a good start. A mound with tons of holes going random directions and a large open area in the center for meetings and sacrifices.

how about a blown-out M103 tank?

I kind of like the idea of a tree fort, that and I might be able to duel use it for a wood elf force too.

oh, here's a WIP of what I've got so far.

7 warband(one general)
2 shooters
2 lurkers
1 behemoth

may replace the lurkers and 1 warband with a magician, can be general.

Love your Hydra where's it from, I don't recognise it?

Darwin Green01 Feb 2014 12:37 p.m. PST

was chatting with my older brother, who's always been a huge fan of snakes mentioned this.

"If they were cobras they'd have dens. Maybe something like hobbit homes. Other species would have different types of houses though. Green tree snakes would have tropical arboreal houses. Probably something like lotr wood elves. It would be fun it different species kept their relative sizes too. Anacondas would be huge monsters and corn snakes are just little guys."

Love those pictures, Stroezie

You may want to check out the Grendel Temple of set terrian – it goes well with the egyptian theme. Although it is nominally for 28mm, it would work fine for 15mm as monumental sized terrain.

Somewhere like this I think…

Uchisar castle, in Capadoccia, turkey.

The area is a volcanic desert, basically. Little vegetation and other building material, but lots and lots of very soft stone.
The most amazing part of this photo is that the city itself is much, much bigger than this, but it's underground….
