We had a Slammers game at my club on Monday night.
Two members – Mike and Ken – wanted to play and another chap – James – asked if he could join in (though he didn't stay till the end).
The Set UpMike ran the late TAS (Brigade Models) with two straight detachments including infantry with remote control Fireflies.
Ken (and James) ran the Wrangel's Legion and Arietes from my collection, all by GZG. Both are about a detachment each but are a little mixed: the Wrangel's I have are neither a heavy detachment (no mortar and only one gun-system vehicle) nor a light one and have quite a lot of infantry and some double buggies and trikes.
The Arietes are similarly mixed (only one heavier Cougar tank and heavier infantry with remotes and buzzbombs). As the older (period wise) Wrangel's and Arietes have no anti missile capability (and were out-pointed by the TAS), I gave them two advantages: I gave them a sniper that they could share and they had the advantage of picking the buildings to hide their infantry in.
Scenario wise, Ken and James' mission was to guard the city – one building specifically – from attack from whatever direction Mike came in from. Mike's was to get to the building and park outside (or – failing that – destroy it).
All had one obvious command vehicle in their force, meaning three leaders using the rule Leading from the front giving an extra bonus to their leadership skills (at the risk of being targeted by missile attacks).
TAS advanceMike came in on one corner and used Rapid Fire to fast fire his weapon systems at the risk of wrecking his guns. Doing so he quickly knocked out heavier vehicles (the Arietes' Cougar tank, for one) and used the sniper pod on his Banshee to place missiles from cover on other vehicles, though without much success initially.
Cougar goes downKen got off to a bad start with a really poor roll for Leadership Points (snake eyes). Obviously his commander had been on the john when the TAS swept into town
Ken realises he's just thrown a double one for LPsThe fight back from the mixed older mercs continued and – using their sniper – they managed to take out Mike's command tank but Mike had discovered the sniper and hosed him down from his roof top position.
Wrangel's Legion Gun System takes aim
but misses: more bad dice throws!James and then Ken tried to deploy their anti-tank buzzbomb resources, with crews leaping from concealment in buildings and even the remote vehicles controlled by their Lynx MICV but – with the TAS and their ability to use their defensive measures against buzzbombs – they had little success.
Arietes hide their command vehicleIn addition, although requiring a lot of control, Mike used Fireflies against both light vehicles and infantry – and even the remote vehicles – while they were very hard to kill with the weapon systems Ken had available to him.
Wrangel's buggies and their command vehicleThe game finished with Mike in charge of the battlefield but not yet having achieved his objective although – if in the following turn he'd taken a break from blowing things up – with the speed of the TAS vehicles and what he had left, he would have probably succeeded.
It goes without saying that we used Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible rules and two detachments per side using the follwing forces:
