Not the flag type, but a question on what standard people expect models to be painted to. I've done some research in to different companies who seem to be popular/succesful and I've noticed that they offer a standard "triad" style of painting; eg base, highlight 1, highlight 2, and the results are consistent but I wouldn't write home about them if you know what I mean.

So what would you expect as a minimum standard if I was to charge £10.00 GBP per 28mm model? If I follow the trend and set a standard which includes basecoat, "triad" painting and basing, is that too much?

Or am I really barking up the wrong tree?

Hi Mooby,

Firstly nice work on the mini, the apron and trousers look very nice.

£10.00 GBP per 28mm is definitely in the higher price range. For that people would expect a standard probably beyond what you call the triad with a little more shading/highlighting.

If you went at £10.00 GBP, which is do-able, there are a number of great services offering prices around that, you would likely pick up small unit orders, 10-20 men, as you show 40k, think Command Squads, Blood Bowl teams, etc. Models you could take your time on.

I work on the other end of the scale – I charge £2.50 GBP and produce a good solid, top end wargaming quality. Its not uncommon for my commissions to number 100+ models.

Best advice is probably to just give a go. Pitch yourself at one end of the market and advertise.

Brilliant advice thank you Chris. I should probably tone down the price in respect to time as well. I do predominantly paint historical but that figure was for a sci-fi painting comp.

Thanks again :-)

Hyping technique used is a no-go.
It is what the finished product looks like that matters.

What do you mean? Avoid using jargon in regards to technique and simply let the work speak for itself? If so, great advice :-)

@Mooby, I tend to post pictures of my work and let that speak for itself, as John said. It's like on eBay when you see PRO PAINTED!!++++++.

That's a lovely Ork you painted. I don't know what people pay for 28mm (only painted 1/72 for customers), but I would imagine 10 pounds for a character model to certainly be reasonable--maybe even cheap.
