More 11th century illuminations from
Ælfric's Hexateuch An Old English translation of the first six books of the Old Testament. British Library, MS Cotton Claudius B IV

The earliest illuminations are coloured-line drawings with only some yellow coloured-in;
God's Covenant with Abram
but the artist tries something new with colouring-in with shadow and high-lights on the occassional figure;
Abraham and Abimelech
Ishmael became a skillful hunter
Abimelech & Phicol return to Philistia
Esau Sent Hunting
and then on all figures;
Joseph's Brothers Go to Egypt to Buy Grain
The Brothers Bow to Joseph / The Feast
Joseph's Brothers Return to Jacob
Joseph Presents Jacob to Pharaoh
then there are many that seem unfinished with colour blocked-in but no outlines and shadowing;
Pharaoh Decides to Pursue Israel
Pharaoh's Army Pursues the Israelites
Amalek Attacks Israel and Is Defeated
and many without faces including one example with the process partly done;
Marriage of Female Heirs
and a few at the end that are finished.
The Spies Escape from Jericho

These are beautiful illustrations, even the unfinished ones.

Excellent stuff Druzhina.
The two hunting scenes are a good illustration as to why one cannot tryst illuminations when discussing bow length.
