Hello,
Haven't been active on the boards in a few years. Got back into wargaming regularly about a year ago and am painting all the lead lying around slightly faster than buying new figs. To go with my BSG fleets I started a Cylon Army.

We'll be running some Sci Fi themed games at Cold Wars coming up in March. I'll be updating the thread over the next few days to show progress. (That will help keep me going.) Thank, Kon…

Not into the modern BG but.. Those figs look real nice.

Ironwolf20 Jan 2014 10:16 p.m. PST

Who manufactures those 15mm Cylon looking droids?

Dunno, but I bet the license cost them a small fortune.
Odd we have not heard much about them, after all with the licensing fee to recoup you thought they would be shouting from the tree tops that they have an official BSG range…

odd.

Those are actually super battle droid pieces from the Star Wars/Clone Wars Risk game. There are a bunch of threads talking about them. They are easy to find on ebay.

Angel Barracks21 Jan 2014 6:27 a.m. PST

aaaaaaah makes sense.

Easy to gind not so easy on the wallet altho I did get a steal on mine.

TheGaffer21 Jan 2014 3:49 p.m. PST

I'm looking for additional cylons. The Cybots from Astromech will be on order soon. But here is a set from Khurusan that would probably work as well:

The police/security figs might work for Colonial Marines, too.

The ones up above are indeed from the Clone Wars Risk game. Blue and Black armies battle droids, easy to find and about 75 figures cost about $18 USD bucks with shipping. The FOW bases will probably end up costing more than the figs!

They make great generic sci fi droids.

Here are 35 figs for 5.25 plus shipping.

Nice paint job. What was your method?

Cacique Caribe21 Jan 2014 5:24 p.m. PST

I haven't painted mine yet. Those inspiring pics shared posted by this fella:

I might try getting some good silver/metallic spray paint tomorrow to do a highlight job rather than dry brushing / glazing. Maybe use a black wash after. The 4 bucks would sure save a lot of time.

I also have some alcohol based metallic ink I've wanted to experiment with. I'll try that tomorrow.

Here is the first dozen I mucked around with this evening. Used Vallejo Natural Steel as a glazing. (Wet brush instead of dry brush).

The kewl things I come across here on TMP. Thanky.

McWong7322 Jan 2014 3:08 a.m. PST

I found the Khurasan SEAL figures in their modern range to be good proxies for Colonial troops.

TheGaffer26 Jan 2014 11:26 a.m. PST

I see most folks base the figures individually. I'm going to base mine in Teams. Do most rules use FOW sized bases or HOTT/DBx sized bases? Either would work for our home rules, just wondering what is somewhat "standard" these days.

The battle droid figures are coming out so well, I ordered some more while they are still plentiful and cheap! (More pics coming soon.)

Cacique Caribe26 Jan 2014 11:46 a.m. PST

I've got over 200 of them myself!!! Except they are still unpainted and stashed away in a bin.

Dan

TheGaffer26 Jan 2014 12:01 p.m. PST

I've got bins of figures squirreled away too.

TheGaffer27 Jan 2014 7:33 p.m. PST

Getting close to finishing this set. Here is the sequence we used.

cylon_paint_sequence

Black Primer then wait 10 minutes and dust with brown spray paint to pick up the highlights.
Painted with Vallejo Gunmetal Grey followed by a citadel blue wash.
Vallejo natural steel highlight then painted the eye bright orange then
bright red at the top.

McWong7327 Jan 2014 9:45 p.m. PST

Re basing, I'm using a combo of individual basing for skirmish and FOW basing for larger scale games. If I didn't have a pile of figures and could only do one style of basing I'd go team based/FOW style.

Hey Kon,
For that old school look grin:

TheGaffer03 Feb 2014 7:13 p.m. PST

Some more progress. Got them on bases and will be doing some flocking tomorrow while we wait for the Khurusan figures to come in later this week.

Cylon Army

There's a WH walker and killa' kan' in the background for scale and the small space figure is a rebel minis marine. I'll get a better camera out later.

Hope this shows the value of regular thrift store crawls.

Over the years, it's been mostly old Risk and the kneeling Nappy fellows for the HUGE 10mm table that will probably never happen, but there's also been LotR for lots of Orc and Elvish goodness, 2210 for mechs, and a couple of Clone Wars boxes that have been waiting on JUST this inspiration.

$2 USD to $4 USD per game.

Huge thanks, Guinach!

Doug

Glad someone's enjoying it. Did a little more work this evening. Just waiting for the Khurusan Figures to arrive, which included an order of Dethroids! TMP Thread

The small bases in the back will be crew-served MG / bazooka equiv stands. The large bases will be some sort of large crew served gun. Will go through the bits box to see what I have from all the 40k bits amassed over the years.

Colonials coming soon!

Duck Crusader06 Feb 2014 10:17 p.m. PST

Dead interested to see what yer going with for Colonials.

Heinz Good Aryan07 Feb 2014 8:06 a.m. PST

cool stuff, that's a great use of pieces from a game…..

TheGaffer08 Feb 2014 1:57 p.m. PST

Waiting for some figures, so researching some tank options for the colonials. This looks like a suitable near future scifi-ish tank. Might look good with the Rebelminis Merka V.
M60A2 wiki available at Herpa Never realized these turrets were used on an M60 hull. Looks like an M551 Sheridan tank at first glance.

Herpa_M60A2

Anyone use this brand of models for their games?

TheGaffer14 Feb 2014 5:54 p.m. PST

The astrominiatures came in the other day. Thanks to Matt for getting them out so quick. Here they are, formed up for the painting factory.

mk1_cylons_ready_to_prime by WNGA, on Flickr

Hope to prime them this evening while it's still warm enough.

Colonials arrived from Rebel Minis too! Mike got them out pretty quick and they arrived fast as well. Great job Postal Service! Especially with all the snow we had out here.

TheGaffer15 Feb 2014 6:25 p.m. PST

Finished painting the astrominis. They came out pretty well. Nice, clean, castings, very little flash which was nice. They have a good amount of detail and nice proportions. I used some WH Nuln Oil on the first one so you can see some of the detail in the casting.

Here are the steps I took. May seem kind of excessive for a simple finish like this, but the effect is quite nice when you hold the figure. Lots of nice depth to the metal.

Prime with Rustoleum double coat primer, paint with Vallejo gunmetal, wash with WH nightshade, glaze with Valleho natural steel, paint the eye with flat red and glossy red.

mk1_paint_process by WNGA, on Flickr

I'd like to see some of the other Cylon armies that are out there.
