I missed the Kickstarter
kicked myself
but got it off Ebay for a very reasonable price. I've played a couple of games now and my initial thoughts are up on my blog (with pics) at: link In game photo from the post:

Correct me if I am wrong, but with all of the player aids it does not appear that this came is suited for fleet actions unless you have a bunch of players. |

Had a chance to play a couple of games last Saturday. The basic game was pretty good. Looking forward to playing some more. |

It is a great game! You must pay attention to the wind though. Going to order more ship cards and damage counters, I ended up with 24 ships altogether. Since each ship has alternate cards, that's one of each. |

Is it true there are no ship's stats in the rulebook, so if one wants the stats for a brig (for instance) one will have to wait for Ares to produce the model? ( Which means it's pointless to hang on to your 1/1200 ships, for instance)? |

Wow, that sure takes up a lot of space! |
Tankrider | 20 Jan 2014 3:11 p.m. PST |
Yea reminds me of all the ship cards and counters for MAN O' WAR Fantasy Naval.. didn't care for that much. |
David Manley | 20 Jan 2014 6:17 p.m. PST |
IMHO this is a great set for small actions. I wouldn't try a fleet action with them. I'm sure someone will try though :) |
jgibbons | 20 Jan 2014 6:26 p.m. PST |
I may look into that
Thanks! |

Hello all, Yes, for fleet actions you would really need several players. I think, with experience, you can run 3-4 ships
maybe 5
but that would be the limit. The counters are not that bad
it looks worse that it is
several are for the advanced rules. Regards, Jay |

So Ares is NOT including ship data in the game? That's a definite deal breaker for me. And
. For the ships they have done so far, do they include different firepower data for the ship over time? Example: The RN 74s of 1760 (like Bellona) did not carry carronades when launched (those came about later). But by 1805, most RN SoLs were carrying many carronades on their foc'sle and quarterdecks (with a considerable increase in close in hitting power). Does Ares make provision for this? If not, then they have definitely screwed the pooch on this one. |

"Which means its pointless to even consider Sails of Glory
" Indeed – if you are a committed naval gamer with an exiting collection I don't think you'll use this "out of the box"
the rules themselves are interesting and could be merged/adapted to existing rule sets. I think, as I say in my blog post, this game is perfect for someone like me – who primarily plays several other periods and does naval "on the side" and is unwilling (or rather unable given my other projects) to spend much if any time on getting the miniatures completed so I can play --- this gives me a game that I can use to scratch that itch right out of the box. |

Also, for the earlier question --- each ship comes with stats for two different ships --- at a single point in time (year)
no provision in the ship packs for anything outside of the given year the ship comes with
although adjusting the stats/cards would not be difficult. |

Just played first games – simple yet elegant I liked them. People who play Wings of War/Glory etc are going to pick it up very easily. First Nap naval game which has me interested in picking it up. |

Yep my sentiments exactly
if you're already setup to play the era with minis and rules its probably not going to "float your boat" <groan> |

Well, thanks for confirming my worst suspicions. Unfortunately, this is one game that will NOT be on my 'to buy' list (and, frankly, shouldn't be on any other serious AoS gamer's list). |
War Panda | 21 Jan 2014 8:58 p.m. PST |
Jay did the mat come with the game or did you get it separately? |
sotek486 | 22 Jan 2014 8:32 a.m. PST |
@Grey Panda: The mat is separate – it was part of the "Captains" level for the Kickstarter. I picked a second one up off of Ebay. Also
"its probably not going to "float your boat"" – LOL! |
Trajanus | 02 Feb 2014 6:11 a.m. PST |
The lack of ship data in the rules is just in keeping with Wings of War where it only comes with the planes. The people at Ares see the game as accessable AoS in the same way as the other set is accessable airwar. Neither of them are supposed to be part of broader more detailed world for "serious" gamers who might have one or other as their main hobby. |
Charlie 12 | 03 Feb 2014 10:10 p.m. PST |
No, Ares sees the game as a vehicle for selling their ship models. Same sales model as WoG. And that's fine, if you want to accept that. But some of us already have the ships and really don't see the point of buying more ships just to obtain ship data cards. |
Trajanus | 04 Feb 2014 7:34 a.m. PST |
I can see that. Interestingly it doesn't stop people buying other manufactures models in WoG because the detail on them is better. |
devsdoc | 04 Feb 2014 12:15 p.m. PST |
That I can understand for WOW/G as they are the same scale. But 1-1000 for 1-1200 scale will not work for some. The scale different is not too bad, but is still different. I know of no other models makers that make 1-1000 scale ships. If I'm wrong let me know. Be safe Rory |

I returned quickly to Close Action. |

A great game for all ages. My sons, my grandson (7) and I has a splendid couple of games using the basic rules and are ready for the standard and advanced rules. Be careful of collision rules. Very nice overall production value even if the ships are fairly basic. The ease of getting into the game and the flow of the game may make future converts to other great games like Close Acton. Seems to be a winner for Ares again and good for them. I too wish I'd joined in the Kickstarter. |
