For many years, I have been wanting to get into 6mm science fiction gaming. The new Onslaught miniatures have really caught my attention. I want to do some 6mm before my eyes and hands still work! My big problem is that I have no idea what infantry figures and armor and how many to buy! Since I play solo, it makes all the harder to make armies since my opponent also is clueless. LOL. I love the Okami Technocracy Combine and the Avians. The other factions are not my thing. I would like to play some version of Epic, either Epic:A or NetEpic. I'm not sure yet. Perhaps one of the other new 6mm rule sets out there? I'm know very little about the 40K universe beyond what most non-GW gamers know, never having played the games but having picked up some of the books back during RT and 2E days. So based on those two OM factions, what units and how many of them would make for some good starter forces for some of the 6mm rules out there? Would the two factions work together or are they stand alone armies? (See how clueless I am?) After this I think I could piece together some basic opponent armies like an Imperial Guard or some other generic army. BTW please don't send this old man to another forum for answers. We have many super-smart 6mm gamers right here, where I am comfortable. ;-) I appreciate any help. I hope I was not too confusing in my post. Link to Onslaught Minis: onslaughtmini.com |

Hi Mr. Tribbles: I am in the same boat as you: I am returning to Epic after a 20 year absence and I'm not sure which rules to use. Net Epic Gold is based on Space marine 2nd edition and is free. Epic Armageddon is also free and is the fourth edition of Epic. There are Tau Empire lists for both games floating around the net, so you can easily work up army lists. As I understand it, Epic Armageddon armies tend to have fewer models, so if you don't want to buy/paint a lot of figures, Epic Armageddon will probably be your best bet. Again, I'm sort of a newbie to Epic, so I am also interested in what info others have to add. |

I have heard good things about FWC, I bought it but haven't had a chance to learn it yet. |

Inclined to agree that Epic A sounds most promising. There is a complete fan-curated download here with side-bar Q&A and with all army lists included: link Me, I'm looking for a smaller-scale game to play with my 6mm sci-fi stuff, and may still be looking for a while. |

Fewer models is always a good start. :-) I'm wondering how other guys have used these Onslaught minis in their own armies as well. Some painted photos would also be nice. |

I agree with Hydra that Epic Armageddon is your best bet. After trying earlier Epic versions & similar rules we always come back to EA. It's a very good system with enough detail to make the armies really different and the 'blast marker' concept greatly aids realism. If you go to the "Tactical Command" site, they list a lot of proxies for the now more difficult to obtain/expensive Epic figures. Just about anything can be "Imperial Guard". The Technocracy sounds like Tau, but I have no experience with the minis. No group could have wanted Future War Commander to work more than ours. It was less detailed than Epic Armageddon, but you could play any minis range with it. We abandoned it after a year because we found that while it played a 'straight' conventional army OK, it was not so good handling things with energy shields, tunnelers, or other exotic weaponry. Strike Legion was also good, but we always came back to Epic Armageddon and now get in a game of it most weeks. Having done it many times, I can verify that Epic Armageddon also plays well solo. Good luck with your quest! |

Hi there Mister Tibbles! I'd like to cast my vote for NetEpic. It's basically a "fan refined" version of one of my favorite games, Epic 2nd edition/Titan Legions. You can find everything you need to play for free here: netepic.org/netepic.html Its a great game, simple, and full of character. A good starting spot for this game is 3,000 points. After a few games you can bump this up – I like to play 6,000 points per side myself. Have Fun! |

The great thing with epic is that if you have an army for say epic Armageddon, then its not a huge effort to use that army for netepic, or FWC etc. As has already been said, and I know that you didnt want links to other forums but if you really want the best advise for epic or 6mm scifi, i would recommend you visit the tactical command site. have fun! steve |

EA is my favourite rules for epic gaming, I love the blast marker concept. There is a wealth of fan based rules and army lists, one of my favourite is minigeddon , basically you play games with army values up to 1000pts. The rules can be found here link The OM are very Tau and as for Imperial guard, dark realm have some fantastic proxies. Good luck with the project I am sure you will not be disappointed with getting into Epic! |

You could try all those. I like FWC and I have NetEpic on my list of rules to try. You could also check out: panzer8.weebly.com/rules.html Very basic rules to get things going. |

For grittier "hard SF" gaming, I'd recommend Dirtside II from GZG, my personal fave, but Epic:A is a pretty good ruleset too, as is NetEpic. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. |

All good ideas. In addition for approximate numbers of figures you might like to check the sorts of lists people have used in Epic Armageddon Tournaments in the UK. Click on the drop down list and select Tau as probably the best match for Okami: link Note the infantry (i.e. Firewarriors) are listed by number of stands, not number of figures. Typically 3-5 infantry figures to a stand depending on how much painting you want to do

Thanks, MarkC. Those lists will help a lot. Thanks for all the rules suggestions and input, everyone! Nice thing is that most all of these rules are free. Looks like some reading and planning is in order. |

I play Epic Armageddon as well. I did some numbers at home, which I will post, but it will give you an idea of how many models you should purchase to field a competitive Tau army. You can add to it for flexibility, but give me a few hours to get home and find my notes

Very generous of you, Kealios. Take your time. I'm patient and grateful. |

OK, I took this list from an Army entry over on TacCom. This is not my list: FW+FW+Pathfinder+Ethereal Mech FW+Skyray Crisis+1 Crisis+SC Broadsides Stealth Recon (3/3 split) Recon (3/3 split) Fusionheads+Fusionheads+Skyray Railheads+Railheads Barracuda Squadron This translates to: 18 stands of Fire Warriors (at 3 to 5 infantry per base, your preference
I tend to go for 4 each) 2 Pathfinder stands (same model count) 4 Devilfish 1 infantry character upgrade as part of FW's 2 Skyrays 5 Crisis suit stands (2 each), 1 of which has a character upgrade 6 Broadsides 6 Stealth suits 6 twin-fusion Hammerheads 6 Railgun Hammerheads 2 Fighters That should help with the quantity of models. WHAT you buy is your preference
but that could be a guide, I hope

I forgot that you'll also need 6 each of the Piranna and Tetras (scout bikes, basically). |

Thanks much. I have a good idea now. |
