I am wanting to do some early war German Light Cavalry and also some early war German Dragoons, and am trying to confirm if they should both be lance armed? I think they were, but haven't been able to find anything finite, so any help is appreciated. Thanks, Terry |

Greetings If you mean WWI then yes, all German cavalry would be lance armed (1809 pattern lance), whatever the type of regiment. However the uniforms would differ. Regards Edward |

All German WW1 cav carry a lance. All, except the "Lancers", had a 6 foot one, the "Lancers" a 10 foot one. They were made of steel tubing with diagonal cut at the pointy end. Source
.. ahhh, I read it a long time ago at the library and did not note the book. Maybe, Funkin on WW1 uniforms? |

Yes, for WWI, and thank you both very much for the confirmation. |

Greetings The German lance used in WWI seems to have been an M1893 (I clearly cannot type) hollow steel version. I think (to be confirmed) they were about 10' (310cm) in 3 parts. Regards Edward |

As the early weeks of the war unfolded, the problems of the lance became apparent. There were two major issues. The lance impeded movement through wooded areas, which was a problem in the likes of the Ardennes region. The other issue was that the lance would give away a position. This was a problem for patrols, where stealth and remaining hidden were of paramount importance. I don't know of any examples, however, where units discarded the lance – though one or two individuals did in non-Uhlan units ;-) Robert |
