Can anyone give me some advice on painting plaids and tartans on 10/12mm figures or point me to a place where I can see how others have done it.. I guess it has to be a suggestion of plaids but i can't achieve it. I just converted some unarmoured Normans from kallistra to generic dark age types link I tried painting patterned material on the cloak of one model and it was an unmitigated disaster. Any help you can give would be great |

I have a hard enough time doing it on 28mm figures! When Army Painter comes out with a spray can of Black Watch, that will sure simplify matters. |

@john heheh now that would be a great idea.. I tried with super fine 0000 brushes and I consider myself to be a fair painter but it looked like someone had smeared it with bird droppings. |

I would suggest trying to go with two similar colors
i.e. a slightly different shade of brown on brown. several thin lines in both directions. less contrast will help with the "suggestion of plaid" without drawing the eye to the mistakes. also, don't over do it. This Thread might help: TMP link |

There's a couple of threads on our Forum: link link (ignore the tartan paint jokes!) And a pic from last years Painting Competition:

I would try a matt base colour and use fine tip felt tip pens over the top before matt varnishing. Much more control in a pen, try pilot fineliner or similar. |

I've done it on my 1/300 scale Jacobites. Get a brush with a good point; pick simpler tartans ( Cameron of Erracht is right out!); forget diced hose with diagonal dicing! |

many thanks for the replies. The felt tip pen one actually gives good results after varnishing. Gives a muted result which is what I was looking for. Remember I'm trying to reproduce well worn and simple homespuns for the dark ages not for the regimented tartans of the 17/18 century.. |

Unbelievable, I didn't think tartans could be reproduce this good on 12/10 mm figures. Great work guys! |

I use fine-pointed marker pens to put on a basic set after painting the plaid, kilt, or trews in their basic colour. It works in most cases (but not for red on green or black, alas). In 10mm, which I do too, you can get away with less minute detail. |

P. S. A plaid is a GARMENT, some of you! |
