Was wondering if anybody that plays Roman Seas could help with a few rules questions? I've owned them for a while and am just getting around to reading them. Can't quite get a grasp on the Ramming/Oar Rake charts. If a 6 is always successful, why the ship size comparison and the "to Hit" numbers? And if those are "to hit" numbers then does a Very Small Ship actually have that much of better chance to successfully ram a Large ship and doing damage than the Large ship would have against it? Then there's the whole acceleration/deceleration thing. Little confuing. I'd ask at the Yahoo group, but for some reason my membership is still "pending". I've got other feelers out on this, but any help with questions on this set of rules would be helpful. Thanks. |

Good luck on getting any answers from Eric; we've been waiting for a few years now. |

What's not to understand about oar rakes? With no modifiers, its a 50% chance (6+ on a d10) to rake (or ram) a vessel of your own size. Its easier to hit vessels bigger than you, its harder to hit them if they are smaller than you. That's still evident today – bigger boats (no matter what propels them; oars, sails, or motors) are less maneuverable than smaller ones. You can increase (or decrease your Speed) by 1 point for each hex you move into. It takes time to get going fast or to cut speed -- you don't instantaneously change to max or min Speed during movement. So you need to plan ahead if you want to get up to max Speed, and you won't immediately stop if you want to slow down. |

The yahoogroup has proposed speed rules written by a gamer. If you post your email address here then I will send them to you. |

Thanks you Sgt. Paper for the info. It is helpfu and appreciated. As to getting answers from Eric, he responded last night to an email I sent this weekend. He explained his lack of responses over the last couple of years and said he would answer any questions I had. I posted them this morning before checking here. I'll leave it to him to explain on this forum his delays, if he so desires. The reasons are his business. I will say, however, that after reading his explanation for the problems I am more inclined to fell sympathetic than frustrated or hostile. He stated that his situation has now changed, and his intention is to work this year at clearing things up. I'm willing to give him a chance
after all we've all had hard times and deserve a break from time to time. |

Caesar, Okay, I admit, I'm computer illiterate. So
I'd like the explanation (though I do expect clarification from Eric). I'm not keen on putting out my email address in a forum post however. Unless you have another way of doing it through this site which I don't know about (a real possiiblity given my lack of technological expertise), let me see about starting a yahoo acount to get the info and then just dropping the account later. Thanks |

Caesar: Just heard back from a player
can you say that when you mean someone who plays a particular wargame or does it take on the connotation my kids use, not sure? Anyway, he's played at conventions and such so he's offered to do some explaining for this poor befuddled soul. Thanks for the offer, but it looks like I'm covered. Appreciate it. Keith |

Glad there was a happy ending. Hopefully, Eric will get around to approving your membership in the next year or so
