As a follow-up to my post on how to beat Chaos with Dwarfs, we had the battle on the weekend – my Dwarfs lost by a hair, but it was a near-run thing

We each had 3000 points of Dwarfs/Chaos Daemons with 500 points of allies – the Chaos guys took Orcs and we Dwarfs took Empire (all cavalry)

The game went six turns; the Dwarf army had some solid core units (warriors, Longbeards, Hammerers) and lots of guns; the Chaos army took huge losses in moving forward, but there were two crucial turning points; i) when the Chaos general (The Lord of Change – that Chaos chicken thing) managed to survive a bombardment from two cannon and a unit of Thunderers – to go on to over-run the cannon and our elite Grudge Thrower, only to go down to our Hammerers, who we had to move out of reserve – and ii) our initial placement, when we put our one unit of Slayers on the left flank, which was a gun line anchored on a stone wall that was never in threat; had they been in the centre, it might have gone very differently. We also had our Dwarf Lord transfigured to gold along with half the Longbeards, which was not much fun for us – and I think that we were way too conservative in how we used our knights (they got charged three times but only charged once)

Overall, we had a great time – and thanks again for the advice

Agreed! And in the case of my Dwarf gunners – bad dice at the wrong time!

I blame the Slayers.

(of course I did not watch the game and did not know the organizations or the terrain or, yea…)

I blame the Slayers.

Not the Slayers fault.

Should have taken Empire foot troops and not Cavalry.

Plus should not have wasted Cannon shots on the Lord of Change or the Thunderers those should have targeted something else.

Sure Cannons have a chance to kill it but it has a really good save.

So should have dropped the Cannon and gone with more troops.

Dwarf Lord transfigured to gold? Probably how he'd have wanted to go.
