Having painted enough miniature flags for my wargames armies, I've always fancied having a real flagpole in the garden. So I was delighted when my family, despite their misgivings about the ‘nerdiness' of our home being adorned by such a thing, gave me a full-size flagpole as an unusual Christmas present. I already own a few flags I can fly – a couple of New Zealand ensigns of course, but also a Dutch flag (my parents' birthplace), and an American one (given to me many years ago for some long-forgotten reason). A British flag is a must-get, as my wife was born in England. She also has some Croatian heritage, so there's another flag to find. And then it'll be just whatever other interesting countries I can obtain flags for. Besides modern flags, I'd also like to seek out some historical ones to fly on appropriate days. But the flag I chose to fly for the pole's inauguration this afternoon was the one in the pic above – guess where it is from (a place that is very special to me). Great idea, and you can collect all the relevant flags from your family history

There was a fellow around the corner from my moms house who was a USMC vet who flew the Marine Corps flag and US flag on a full size flag pole, lit at night and all. It was nice to see some display the flag properly, unlike the trend at the time to fly the flag off the back of your car and get it all torn up an filthy. Unfortunately he moved and the pole sits empty. |

Opposite my office is a medieval tower which is now a house. The guy who owns it fly's a variety of interesting flags but they don't last long in the English weather! |

Down the road from my parents' place lived a chap who worked in the Dept of Foreign Affairs ie diplomatic branch, and was often overseas visiting various countries for work. His family at home would fly the flag of the place he was visiting. David F Brown |
