We played the first games of Sails of glory this evening. Easily played 4 games in 4 hours with lots of fumbling through the rules. Mangled a rule here and there, but overall it went well. Personally I went 2 and 2, and lost my ships both times my side lost. We had 4 players, each controlling a ship at a time. We agreed that we would not want to do more than a ship at a time, but were tinkering into the advanced rules by the third game.
I had been a little concerned after getting the game and reading the rules. It seemed a little much, but is an easy learn. I will bring my stuff to Cold Wars Thursday night and see if anyone wants to do a pick up game

I'd be into this like a shot if I thought I could use it with my nice collection of 1/1200 ships. Game ships are 1/1000 I think? Possibly there might be a sabot base solution.

I played it at ORIGINS…good fun. I really thought about going all in on the Kickstarter…but wimped out….

I see no reason that you cannot use 1/1200 ships. The broadside arcs might take some finesse, but not impossible.

I'd need a deck of cards for each ship though?

I understand there is a set of panel-cards for damage etc, are they generic or tailored to specific ships?

I know this is a strange comparison but how do they compare to Game's Workshops's Man 'O War? Now that was a game that was easy to handle a small fleet with one player….

What do others recommend for small to medium fleet actions in the age of sail that isn't too complicated (or really too simple?)?

I see no reason that you cannot use 1/1200 ships.

You could just buy the ship boxes which include the maneuver deck, firing arc base, and damage track. Then just put your 1/200 model on the base and not use the plastic one.

Not to mention, if you buy the game (for rules and counters) you get four ships already.

I used my 1/1200 models with templates for firing arcs abd attitude to wind when I was play testing and it worked fine.
