And when I say the last, I mean it!

According the GW account manager who manages our shop account, Nids WD will be the last WD published, at least in its current iteration as a monthly magazine. It will be replaced by two products, one monthly and the other weekly.

Those magazines will be published only in English.

I have mixed feelings. I have fond memories of the Old School White Dwarf, so I feel somewhat sorry that it will be discontinued. On the other hand, the current WD was nothing more than an expensive and glorified catalogue of new releases…

Wow – end of an era.

Although I stopped buying it regularly around Issue 50 !

Peaked at about issue 79. But sometimes worth picking up for lotr eye candy.

streetline10 Jan 2014 4:06 a.m. PST

They're still selling subscriptions mind you.

Sometimes you get good news even on a rainy day.

They're still selling subscriptions mind you.

That's because they could convert everyone to the online web-zine subscription for the same price as the print version.

WarWizard10 Jan 2014 7:36 a.m. PST

So the new products are web based, not printed products?

I read a rumour about this only a couple of days ago. At first I thought some sort of April Fool joke – but I have since seen other comment.

Earlier today I called into WHSmiths to search out The Last Issue Of White Dwarf, but was not able to find one.

I have mixed views on the demise of WD as for some time I have not enjoyed the content and have not purchased one. In fact I have been donating some of my later issues to the works canteen.

My head says good riddance, my heart is pulling in another direction as I cannot help but look back (with Rose tinted glasses) at the hey day of White Dwarf when I would eagerly search out the latest issue to read from cover to cover. Some twenty/Thirty years on I still have my collection of early WD magazines and doubt I will ever get rid of them.

Today I feel that trends in Wargaming (or as GW would say – The Hobby) are moving away from paper based production and more to electronic – as a bit of a dinosaur, I regret the demise of WD and although not shedding a tear am a little sad at its demise.

However as has been shown in the past GW do have a track record of surprising us.

RIP White Dwarf

Tony

I'm sure that I'm not the only one who was done mourning the demise of WD years ago?

I remember articles such as Peter Morrison's Battle Lines bit in WD#122 or the instructions on how to build a Baneblade out of plasticard.

There haven't been articles that useful for quite a while.

Spot on, Seamus.

…An scenarios featuring orks vs. Paranoia troubleshooters!

Was that the scenario where the Orks were Grok's Green Grossers or something along those lines?

I can't say this comes as a big surprise. Subscriptions and sales of WD are probably low to non-existent today. I used to buy WD almost every month, but even before they switched to the current glossy new format a few years ago I stopped buying them regularly and maybe get 2 – 3 a year. Last year, I only bought 2.

I see WD (and 'Miniatures Wargaming') at Barnes & Noble. They put them in the hobby section along with plastic kit modeling and RC aircraft mags, but I don't think they sell very well.

RIP WD.

WD died years ago as a real magazine as far as I can see. They sold out to the money men. Once it stopped being about wargames and become a sales catalogue its number was up. I have fond memories of the old WD back in the day but I will not more the passing of a glossy catalogue.

Was a keen buyer between issues 86 -110, although I was kinda drifting away from 100. Bought a number of back copies going back to the #60's. Oddly got a subscription as a present when the LOTR stuff came out, and have ended up with a few newer second-hand ones usually part of miniature job lots from ebay.

I will miss it even though I haven't actually purchased one new since #126 (June 1990 – I just googled it to check!) so probably have no real right to have an opinion as I haven't bought one in 24 years! It does make me feel soooo old thinking about it even though I was a teenager at the time.

So very true but there have been lots of petty pictures of the huge models that they want their Fanboyz to buy.

I picked up my first copy back in 1989 issue 112 and I got it for years.

Then GW like everything else they touch trash it.

Hasn't been worth buying for nearly 15+ years.

Looks like the relaunch didn't work out : PDF link

Can't say I'm surprised. You can only raise the price of a monthly catalog-and-self-back-pat for so long before folks stop buying.

I've got rose colored glasses for the 90's when I read it fairly regularly and it sometimes had interesting DIY terrain projects and free cardstock scenery and mini-games. Of course even in the 90's it was a big advertisement, but at least it had some content. That was all gone before the turn of millennium, IMHO.

I still occasionally buy pre '99early issues of it when I find them for uber-cheap. They're fun to read through.

All this asside, I don't think WD is actually disappearing, here's some more details:

White Dwarf had some good content when I got back into 40k and Fantasy in the late 90's. I thought it had a good run during Pawl Sawyer's tenure as editor. The last few years have been dreadful. Long gone are the terrain building and conversion articles. Long gone are the interesting scenarios and campaign ideas. They even got rid of most of the stories and fluff. It was really nothing more than a big advert.

Mithmee10 Jan 2014 6:21 p.m. PST

Looks like the relaunch didn't work out.

Gee, you think it still was nothing but a fanboyz paid advertisement that had mostly nothing but pictures of the current models that they want to sell and lousy articles.

The Battle Reports were prue crap.

The thing is it was once a very good gaming magazine but then GW got taken over and the new leaders turn it into trash.

All of the individuals who were great game designers have been force out and now they got idiots writing the rules.

I enjoyed it 25-18 years ago but it is nothing but trash now.

Back then it had great articles, great battle reports, etc…

So interesting comments from the fans there "Bass".

About the same that I would have written.

I see this as nothing but a new way for GW to dig into their fanboyz wallets.

Put out a Weekly paid advertisement that will cost $7 USD-$11 dollars. Then put out a big 230 pages of crap and petty pictures that could go for around $20 USD-$30 each month.

Make it paper at first then turn it to digital and continue to charge you and more than likely put MALWARE onto your computer.

That is what I would expect from GW.

Possibly my fault as I cancelled my son's quarterly subscription a couple of months ago. Even he no longer looked at it…… sorry grin
