Thought you all might like to see how some paint, rigging and brass ratlines can transform the Sails of Glory ships into ones that are even more authentic looking. And just so there's no misunderstanding I think the basic ships look pretty darn nice right out of the box. Enjoy and thanks!

Great work Jim thanks for posting the photos! |

Yes sir, that really makes these models pop! |
Timmo uk | 08 Jan 2014 11:08 a.m. PST |
A significant improvement. It's nice to see you using the smoke templates, they look like the ones I was asked to draw up for production. The only thing I'm not so keen on with SoG is the thickness of the base but perhaps Litko might be onto that at some point. May I ask how long you thought your upgrades to the basic model took you and what do you think to the game itself? |

I would LOVE to see an outline of the process you followed to add the rigging & ratlines! Looks awesome! |

Lovely work- What did you use for the ratlines? |
benglish | 08 Jan 2014 11:35 a.m. PST |
Definitely an improvement. |

Is the base thick to make it easier to pick up the ships, which are not glued to the base IIRC? |
Nightmoss | 08 Jan 2014 12:53 p.m. PST |
@Timmo uk I don't really mind the base thickness all that much. It's much easier for me to pick them up and move around for card placement. I do know folks on the SoG Anchorage are planning some base work using Litko's, but don't know much beyond that. Roughly two evenings work I think went into this? Painting was not bad; focused on the sails, masts and hull. A wash to warm things up. Rigging took longer, but that could be streamlined by other techniques, and the flag and pennant weren't absolutely necessary. I've only played two or three demos, not a whole game from start to finish, but I really do like the game, it's mechanics and of course, the prepainted ships. @GreenMountainBoy Rigging follows very closely to what is contained in Rod Langton's book. I cut corners in some cases, but it's a guide you can adapt as many have. link @evilcartoonist The brass ratlines come from Rod Langton of Langton's Miniatures. If you're in the US you can also get them from Rob at Waterloo Minis. |

@CPBelt Yes, the base thickness does help some of us move the ships more easily. The ships themselves can be removed so the card underneath can be switched (two versions of each ship are standard). There's a round peg on the ship that fits into the base and clear shield card. |

Well, I've not received my KS purchase, nor the starter set I've ordered. Not even a mention of when they'll be sent. Like the rigging, but not sure I'd be willing to spend time defeating the purpose of pre-paints, that I can play them right out of the box. Have painted and rigged too many 1/2400, 1/1200, 1/900, 1/600 and 1/300 scale ships in my time. Dan |

Nice job Jim. You've made it look almost respectable. Still not for me though. I'll stick to traditional scales and rule sets. |
devsdoc | 09 Jan 2014 12:31 p.m. PST |
As said before, looks more like a model ship now and not a toy. I do like the rules and the day Ares publish a rules only set, I will buy them. Sorry Jim, but all your hard work on the ship has not made me think to buy any of Ares ships. It just shows how good you are at making a sows-ear into a silk-purse. Be safe Rory |

Rules are free if you download and print them. Dan |

Looking for a good source for pennants, as I want to jazz up my ships as well, not as nice as yours. Any suggestions? |
Nightmoss | 11 Jan 2014 2:27 p.m. PST |
At this point all my flags and pennants are coming from Rob at Waterloo Minis, which are all from Langton's in the UK. |

Dan, Rules yes! but not the chips logs etc. But thanks for your help. Rory |

Regarding the thickness of the base. I'm considering cutting the pegs off the ships, installing rare earth magnets and using steel flashing under the ship card for a base. But the thickness of the base does add a little H.G. Wells ambience, so I might not do it
OH the trevails of indecision. |
Nightmoss | 28 Mar 2014 7:39 a.m. PST |
@bakblast: You could use the Langton resin bases (with or without a sub-base)? I used magnets and drilled a hole for the ship peg on the pirate repaint I did. The ships hold very well.
