I've managed to get some stuff finished today so here's my WW2 Russian/Soviet tutorial. It might not be 100% accurate but its good enough for so link hopefully the link will work and Photobucket is going to be on its best behavior and play ball.

So if it works feedback is always and if it proves to be of some use to someone then I achieved what I set out to do! So thanks for looking cheers Russ

Nice work but Russian boots were black, not brown.

Thanks Tin Soldier Man for the kind comments

Marc33594, thanks for info. Like I said its probably not 100% accurate, but the black boots just make me think of Germans. Plus I like alittle Variety but brown boots will be few and far between on my Russians. So thanks for all comments and feedback cheers Russ

Well, you get a lot of leeway when it comes to earlier war Soviets and the M35 uniform here.

If you really like variety in your Soviet uniforms, then check out my several-part detailed painting and uniform guides at my blog. I also love the variety and the battle worn look of veteran Soviets..

I would agree that this should be the only figure with brown boots. You could reason that he stole them off some dead bloke or is using his own. Black was standard. Why do something totally wrong for variety? All you'll have to do then is argue with everyone about it IMO.

Now you get a low of variety in pouch colors, from black leather through browns. Strap colors can vary as well. I discuss this.

The different colors/shades of tunics and trousers will tell you how long a Soviet soldier has been fighting. One of my heroes was lucky enough to get a newer tunic when he got his medal, but kept his faded trousers as a badge of honor, showing his boys, "Fear me! I am a veteran and have killed many fascists while never tearing my pants!" :-) See the stories your figures can suddenly tell?

Soviets can be far more fascinating than the faceless horde people think they were.

BTW Black Tree Design make Soviets with captured German weapons, like the SMGs, and vice versa. Really great stuff for intense skirmish like Stalingrad.

Good to see as I need to paint up some Soviets and I was getting myself confused (and the wonderfully complete blog link above was probably far too much information for my simple brain – excellent work though). I always liked the sandy brown colour from the old Airfix box tops, but I guess teh world moves on.

Bit late to the party here.

America sent 15.5 million army boots to Russia as part of lend lease.
They weren't well liked because the American boots weren't waterproof – they were a US design rather than Russian. Nonetheless, they saw widespread use.
It's my understanding they were brown, although I may be incorrect since I was unable to find any source describing colour when I just had a quick google.

I like brown myself.

AONeill, I always thought the black boots where too German! but I also thought I had read or heard something about brown boots. So maybe its what your refering to. I also like the variety with the Russian uniforms and some how the brown boots look right!

Yesterday I was looking at "The Soviet soldier of ww2" it's one of those picture books with modern re-enactors/whoever dressed up in uniforms.
Plus info on all sorts of aspects of equipment and uniform.
There's a page on boots.
I think the higher/jack boot stylee leather boots would all be black.
The American brown boots pictured were US army style low boots.

There again, these are your little toy soldiers.
If you like brown then go with brown.
I think black looks a bit odd, especially with the lighter end of the possible uniform colours.

I must admit there are times when artistic licence kicks in and over rules authenticity. I've never being a button counter so if it looks right its good enough for me.
