Hi everyone:

I started basing some of my 15mm fantasy figs for Mighty Armies, even though I have never played the game. Most models fit well on the standard 25mm x 50mm or 50mm x 50mm, but a few are too large. For example, I have some OOP centaur skirmishers from Grenadier Models that are way too long to fit on a 25mm x 50mm. I could angle them on the base, but that doesn't look good. I was thinking about using a deeper base, something like 30mm x 50mm or 40mm x 50mm. Is depth important in these rules, as long as the frontage is the same?

I also have a really cool dragon from Demonworld that will not be able to fit on a standard 50mm x 50mm. I hope I can increase the base depth so I can use it.

I play in 10mm, using a standard base size of 20mm x 40mm. My cavalry are mounted on 30mm x 40mm, light infantry on 15mm x 40mm (mainly because that's all I had available to me when I based them) and monsters on 40mm x 40mm. Chariots and some artillery units that are long, thin models use 40mm x 30mm.

Since you only ever have 6 units in a block with a 3 wide x 2 deep formation, as long as they all have common frontage you are OK. My chariots and artillery tend only to be in formation with themselves, but even if they do join a unit, there aren't any game rule or mechanics issues, unless your opponent wants to be especially gamey about distance to contact with different sized bases.

Glad to heart that, Mike. I've been basing a lot of my historical 15s on 40mm frontage but variable depths. Cavalry on 30mm depth, infantry on 20 deep. I didn't think it'd matter much as long as your players aren't asinine.

Yes, we have never had a problem. I am not a big fan of those games where people are like "You clipped my unit by .5mm!" Takes the fun out of it…
