Come to my mind to ask how many fellow members of TMP have studied/know other idiom than english.
I'm talking to those who can managed with them for example in other countries. So, that you can talk and write it.

Thanks for your comments in advance.

Oh, there are loads… wait… I thought he said idiot.

John D Salt06 Jan 2014 11:34 a.m. PST

I can dream in French, speak Russian, struggle with Latin, order a meal in Italian, read most Romance languages and military German with a bit of effort, say "yes", "no" and "thank you" in Arabic, and I once understood a dirty joke in Yiddish (and one in Polish after it had been explained to me).

I have made a flight announcement in Serbo-Croat at Gatwick Airport, but I just made the noises I was told to, I had very little idea what I was saying.

All the best,

John.

I proudly speak fluent Okie, without accent.

I know, you'd have to come here to appreciate it.

P.S. Some days I can even understand KyoteBlue!

I speak American and I know a little bit of English.

Mainly28s06 Jan 2014 12:19 p.m. PST

Fluent English, Afrikaans and German. Some okay Dutch and Flemish. Some passable Spanish and French. Some bad Greek, Portuguese and Latin. Swear words in a lot of languages.
Reasonable HTML, Javascript, Java, Ruby and C#.

English and French, can struggle in German, know a bit of Spanish – am trying to learn Mandarin (I keep getting sent to China for work so I think its time to learn the language) – like Mainly28 I know bad words in about a dozen more languages

Sergeant Paper06 Jan 2014 12:34 p.m. PST

Fluent in (Hawaiian) Pidgin English (and after my brother got language certification in Papua New Guinea Pidgin, I found that I can understand but not speak PNG Pidgin), poor Japanese spoken and written, fair Portuguese and Spanish written. Learned but have forgotten ATLAS and DETOL obsolete computer languages.

Caesar06 Jan 2014 12:54 p.m. PST

I used to be able to converse in spanish, but I struggle with it now. Reading is better than speaking.

Cerdic06 Jan 2014 1:13 p.m. PST

Only English. They tried for years to teach me French at school but I could never remember any of it from one lesson to the next……

Texas Jack06 Jan 2014 1:30 p.m. PST

I can speak Czech, although writing it is a bit of a challenge.

I can also get by in German, but once I am out of my comfort zone (that would be conversation about beer and wurst) then I am done. Oh, and I can cuss a blue streak in the Texas version of Spanish!

Chris Rance06 Jan 2014 1:40 p.m. PST

English, French, Czech (though like Jack I'm happier speaking than writing) and Japanese. Bits of Mandarin, Korean and Danish.

Would love to be able to speak German, but however often I try to get started, I sadly just can't seem to get over the antipathy instilled in me by the worst school teacher I ever had.

abelp0106 Jan 2014 2:54 p.m. PST

I'm fluent in Spanish, English (American style) and bad words! LOL

Dogged06 Jan 2014 3:45 p.m. PST

Catalan and Spanish as mother tongues, English, struggling with learning some French.

Mikasa06 Jan 2014 4:51 p.m. PST

I don't speak French but I do kiss it

American & am fluent in confusion

Henry Martini06 Jan 2014 6:06 p.m. PST

The comedy versions of numerous idiots.

jefritrout06 Jan 2014 6:09 p.m. PST

Besides English, I am fluent in speaking Portuguesebut my reading comprehension is fair and I have difficulty writing it. I am conversant in Spanish actually appearing as a spokesperson for my job on Univision news reports.

charared06 Jan 2014 8:36 p.m. PST

Speak fluent Brooklynese and Anglo-Saxon. Can curse in Russian. Nod my head to speakers of Spanish and French as if I understand them. A slight acquaintance with kindergarten German and a passable ear for vulgate.

Martin Rapier07 Jan 2014 3:26 a.m. PST

English, used to have reasonable French (sufficient to read learned papers in it), rather rough Spanish but sadly my decent German and Latin are in the dim and distant past.

Not many people to talk to in Latin of course.

My Russian is restricted to 'kreb' and various phrases from James Bond and half digested David Glantz books. The former came in handy in Tito era Yugoslavia once, as Russian turned out to be nearest thing we had to a common language.

Remgain07 Jan 2014 3:28 a.m. PST

Italian and Milanese.
I understand pretty well English only if written in wargame rulebooks.
I can speak Spanish only by adding a final "s" to every matching Italian word.

Tango0107 Jan 2014 10:25 a.m. PST

Interesting, spanish seems to be the second idiom here.

I speak of the pompatus of love.

And do it with a slight Welsh accent …

Rudi the german07 Jan 2014 11:00 a.m. PST

Native high german, fluent in english, french, dutch and flemish. Active in hessian and bavarian. Passive in italian, gronings, west frisian, swabian, east saxon, frankish, upper palantine and lower german. Basic in reading middle german and sütterlin.

Howler07 Jan 2014 12:26 p.m. PST

English with quite a bit of southern flavor

mex10mm07 Jan 2014 1:06 p.m. PST

Spanish as my native tongue; can speak, read and write English, and also can, more or less, read some French, Italian and German.

Coelacanth07 Jan 2014 2:35 p.m. PST

I can read French well enough to comprehend a news article, but get lost quickly listening to the spoken language. I sometimes listen to French language videos (mostly news, some movies) in order to improve my comprehension. I have studied German, but my vocabulary is too limited to actually understand the written language. I have, alas, no classical languages.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER08 Jan 2014 4:36 a.m. PST

English first off. I studied Spanish and German and can get around if need be. Also I read Spanish better than German.

I've tried my hand at learning foreign languages, without much success. Nowadays, I only speak English, and I'm not too sure about that half the time.

Pijlie08 Jan 2014 11:37 p.m. PST

I speak and write Dutch, English and German, some basic French and a smattering of Spanish.

Paint Pig10 Jan 2014 11:44 p.m. PST

I speak in Spanish to my dice, Italian to the set of camp followers, French to my command stands and German to my cavalry units!

dave

britishlinescarlet210 Jan 2014 11:57 p.m. PST

Conversational French. very bad Latin, Spanish and German, forgotten the Welsh and Gaelic I once knew.

Thomas Nissvik15 Jan 2014 5:31 a.m. PST

Native Swedish, fluent English. I can communicate in German but it would probably be painful for the natives to listen to me. ;-)

brown and blue23 Jan 2014 5:35 p.m. PST

English and Spanish. I'm a step away from being fluent in Spanish. And for whatever reason, half the adds I now get on the internet are now in Spanish. Scarier yet, I understand them. Lol. Los gabachos hablan español en San Diego. Aquí, necesitas aprender el idioma porque a veces no tienes otras opciones.

On the bright side it helps me with the SCW AK47 mod I am going to game soon

Tango0123 Jan 2014 11:21 p.m. PST

Good written Spanish Chris!
