I know of several references to dragoon troops within Royalist cavalry regiments during the Civil War period
Astons, Rupert and Oxford horse et al

does anyone know of similar within the Parliamentarian armies?
Warwick's 1642 flying army for example?

Cheers

Essex's army in 1644 had Abercromby's troop of dragoons. It numbered 65 ORs and 9 officers. It is not listed as part of a horse regiment, unless there are two mistakes in the records.

The troop of dragoons is listed seperately as Abercromby but the junior most captain of Stapleton's horse is a Captain James Abercomy with 55 ORs and 9 officers.

Is this an error of spelling and numbers and are they one and the same troop? I think they well be, too much of a coincidence…

This army was later supported by two regiments of dragoons from Wallers army. One made up from his regiment of foot, converted for the campaign. Numbers are unknown.

So much was ad hoc during the period and made up to suit the need that I don't think it could be considered wrong if you wanted to add troops of dragoons to your army. Whether they charged with the those regiments of horse they were attached to could only be a matter of conjecture and I think it more likely that they were drawn off to perform dragoon duties on and off the battlefield. Who knows though maybe some thought they were as good as the proper horse so charged in with them on occasion.

An interesting question.

Numbers for this, despite best efforts of contemporaries, are all over the map or missing entirely. Timmo has the most reasonable answer I've seen.

Frankly, if it is pre-Industrial Rev, it can be argued anything goes as the numbers for this stuff are rarely right.

Thanks both for this

interesting- although we have documented evidence of Royalist practise of cavalry regiments/units with organic/combined dragoon troops, we have nothing similar for Parliamentarian forces

thanks timbo for the Essex link, another source starring me inthe face.

John Fiennes Regiment of Horse from the Midlands Association (the "Associated Horse" on Streeter's Naseby map incidentally) certainly had an integral Dragoon Troop and there is evidence that other Horse of the Midlands Association had similar troops.

I have seen secondary sources (yet to find the original source) that the Regiments of Horse of both Gell's and Brereton's Armies also had integral dragon troops.
