Hi,

we finally managed to play a first game of our Wars of the Roses variant of Sharp Practice. We had a real blast! The rules are excellent and perfectly suit our style of gaming. (We used the modifications from the Lardy Summer Special with some minor tweaking of our own).

Sounds like a good game!

I notice that you have purchased a copy of Boardman's book on 1st St Albans. I would advise caution when reading it. He makes some fundamental mistakes and thus confuses the issue considerably.

Thanks Major!
I'd be interested in your view on Boardman – I have only started the St Albans one, although I have read his book on Towton. Do have anything on 1st St Albans you could recommend?

The other book you mentioned by Burley, Elliott and Watson is much better. They are members of the Battlefields Trust and unlike Mr. Boardman, two of them actually live in St Albans.

Oh, that's good to hear! I've been skeptical about Burley et.al. at first, but now I am looking forward to reading it. I've glanced through and liked what I saw so far.
Thanks again for the feedback!

Hello Shandy, read your AAR and enjoyed it immensely, I play SP and TSS (ACW version) and our group enjoy these games absolutely, our games have quite a few troops per side in these and while I do realize you are on a learning curve and have just cut your teeth on these superb rules I can assure you it plays faster when all the fundamentals are learned ( although we do tend to natter on aa bit so the games can turn out to be leisurely affairs ;-) . Am also intrigued by the WotR and I am going to have a go using the supplement which sounds ideal for about 30 to 100 figures a side games, with the sequence in these rule I might add working great for multi-play games with a few intrigue/treachery cards as well (my suggestion these are shuffled into the pack at the beginning of the game and if drawn not shown but played when/if wanted the rest of thes cards would be taken out of play for the rest of the game (unless scenario driven) Anyway great game and inspired to get stuck into my boxs of plastic Perry Mounted MAA and mercenaries and shake the leaves out of my fellow game team for this one, thanks. Cheers.

Thanks Zargon, glad you enjoyed it. The idea with the treachery cards is fabulous! I'd love to try that, unfortunately I have only one gaming partner so no multi-player games for me. But I have made the firm resolve that I shall convert others to mini wargaming this year (or at least find some local players).
Meanwhile, we have played another game (a report will follow on the blog) which was more scenario-driven and much faster (two and a half hours). Truly superb rules!

Got to agree cpt shandy, already rummaging with bits of plastic , was in a quandary about basing for some time but this made up my mind for 28mm. fender washers 25mm for the infantry and something 25/30 x 50 for the mounted. Cheers mate, I'll try to get my progress up here on TMP too.

Good luck Zargon! I am looking forward to reading about your progress.

Nice report – always love to hear about rule-sets play out in various eras!

Clever idea, I like Sharpes enough to copy your idea.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I have to point out however that the idea of using SP for Wars of the Roses is originally by Silverwhistle:

He also wrote the special rules which were published in the TFL 2013 Summer Special.
In one of my next blog posts, I will write about my own adaptations, which are largely identical with Silverwhistle's.

Cheers,
Shandy
