For my self imposed required annual terrain piece I submit the following islands just completed today. Although I have pictured the islands with Napoleonic period ships, all of these could be used with any period from ancient through modern naval gaming, except for the fortified island. I love the look of these Vol, well done! The rock looks very convincing, and the vegetation looks like it works well for the scale. But you won't catch me sailing in between there, I know a trap when I see one

Now those are some nice looking islands! They go really well with the ships too. I have to agree with James, they look like perfect spots for a privateer/pirate ambush. |

Vol, those are excellent. Last year I experimented with using ceiling tile material to make low tropical islands. Ceiling tiles are available at your local big box home store. And you can shape and carve the pieces with a steak knife. Nice. link The ship is the GHQ USS Constitution hull with Langton 64 sails and ratlines. I used a lighter blue paper for the base to show shallows. It has a nice effect on the gaming table. |

I too 2nd Vol's post and how do you move and store them? Be safe Rory |

As much as I would love to say that I made them, sadly I can only claim that I planted them. Artistically, mind you. But only planted them. The palms come from a company called JTT Trees. Here's the link to the palm tree page: link I had picked up some of their trees for a scene on my model railroad, and surfed (pardon the pun) across the palm page and went
Yeah!. Ceiling tile is kind of fragile, so you have to put at least two good coats of latex base coat on to give it some strength, then make sure you put a spray sealant on the whole thing once you're done. Rory, I store and transport the islands in boxes you can get from your neighborhood UPS Store. I use the 12"x18"x4" ones for the islands. They are quite sturdy and can stack pretty high. Ceiling tile islands are very light weight, so stacking really isn't an issue. I have three boxes of islands today. I found that once I got going, I could build six as easily as one. link This link shows you a game (6 players plus me) where I had eight islands on the table, but you can only see six. Home made scenario called "Get the Spaniard" had a British division and a French division trying to sink a good Spanish 38 gun frigate before it could get off the windward edge. No points for sinking any Brit or Frog. Heh, not that that mattered! All islands blocked LOF, but only the largest blocked LOS. The frigate could sail the shoals, but not the two deckers. Lot of fun, the Spaniard barely escaped. |

Thanks Kevin, but the link to the palm trees didn't work. What is the name of the website or company? |
