I'm working on a 28mm Thracian Army. I'm basically trying to make model it as a 5th-4th century BC Odryssian kingdom type army. I'm looking for figures for heavy cav. I have some of the Old Glory figures and I'm not crazy about them. Any suggestions for alternatives? Even some simple conversions would be welcome. Thanks. |

Foundry's Scythian line may do the trick. Also 1st Corps Scythians. |

Check Crusader miniatures, they have four different packs of Thracian cavalry. The two early one's might be what your looking for! |

You could also look at Essex Miniatures – they make a Thracian heavy as well as a General. |

It's difficult to find actual Odrysians in 28mm. I think Xyston made an attempt in 15mm, as well as others. Sadly Skythians are not really close. The Old Glory Heavy Thracians are about it, otherwise it's hunt and peck. I don't think anybody has recreated that old bell cuirass horned helmeted Thracian king since RAFM did them so long ago in 25mm. Which look like this:
These above are for before Alexander the Great's army, but who knows if the style changes-- although art from later periods show less fancy head gear. Probably the best reference for Odrysians are in The Osprey on Thracians (which is a good one), and it has a reconstruction of Odrysians on the cover:
link So you can see that by doing some helmet swaps on other Thracian cavalry you might be able to achieve that look. These are Getae-- so Skythians will work for them, but they are not Odrysians:
And finally--- yes they are skinny OG but these are some of their better figures for later heavy Thracians: link This Relic King has some bits that are useful for swaps: link JJ |

I like Crusader. My Thracian army turned out fairly well if I do say so myself. |

I don't kow if this post will help, but these are my 18mm Xyston Thracian Northern and Southern Nobles
I used my Osprey Book The Thracians 700 BC – 46 AD as a reference.. more images at link |

Thanks for all the tips. I hadn't seen the Crusaders before, and those Xyston 15s are ideal in terms of equipment. It looks like the OG are still the best option. My problem is that they do like a little "pinched", almost like 1/72nd. And they don't have capes for some reason. But the combination of the helmet types and cuirass is hard to find elsewhere, even to swap. I have some and I think I'll try to give them some capes and maybe that will add a little presence to them. I have that Osprey Thracian book and those plates you show, Jeff, and plate A that shows King Sitalkes is what I'm trying for. Thanks again.

Yes that's a tough one to find in 28mm
possibly a head swap with an Italian cavalryman with bronze bell
and add a cloak |

Crusader Miniatures has some armoured Thracian cavalry, very suitable for nobles. crusaderminiatures.com/list.php?cat=1&sub=36&page=1 I just received 2 packs myself. They are pretty nice, a little smaller than Foundry in stature, but detail and sculpting is much better than Old Glory. |

The Crusader figures seem to be quite Hellenistic. If you go this route you really can use most Greek and Macedonian heavy cavalry, especially those in Thracian helmets (such as Thessalians). Mixing in a few Attic helmets would not be inappropriate. If you have the ability, the thing that make them Thracian would be the stripes and patterns on tunics & cloaks. Aventine and Wargames Foundry have figures that could also be used. BTW, Xyston's 18mm Nothern Thracian cavalry are really nice figures. |

A & A also have Thessalians with Thracian helmet, cloaks, and metal Corslet (not bell though).
I think Steve Saleh did both Crusader and A & A ranges. |

Hi Delbruck, I think that was Mark Sims. |
