A spell-binding story of raw courage with NO gore, NO political correctness and NO swaggering Yanks… on its 50th anniversary, a salute to Zulu, a great British war film

"
The battle is re-fought like no other single incident in Britain's imperial history. It reappears regularly on television, particularly at high days and holidays. This festive season is no exception.

On our screens, the desperate fight by 140 soldiers to defend Rorke's Drift, a tiny outpost of Queen Victoria's empire in the South African veldt in 1879, was re-enacted in that classic British war film, Zulu.

Once again, our blood chilled at the fast-approaching rumble of fists pounding on cowhide shields…"

I guess we do swagger a bit.

Great film. Saw it first on TV in 1974.
Blew me away.

GREAT flick! Saw it in the Loew's Shore (Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY) theater during it's 1965 run!

Loved it then (as now)!

(DESPITE my sometimes yank "swagger")

thumbs up

Love it, one of my all time favorites. Often quoted in ranks during re-enactments.

'Fists'? It was the butts of their spears.

I first saw it in 1964, and sat straight through two consecutive showings.

You're not a real gamer if 'Men of Harlech' doesn't give you goose bumps and raise the hair on the back of your neck. Dare I say 'a thrill runs down my leg?'

Hard for me to play a rifle – based game without saying "At 100 yards… volley fire… present!" or "Advance!" or "Spit, boy, Spit!"

What's wrong with swaggering yanks? We work hard at doing it so well.

Great flick, BTW. It is on my watch list for this weekend.

Colour Sergeant Bourne: It's a miracle.
Lieutenant John Chard: If it's a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it's a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle.
Colour Sergeant Bourne: And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind.

Great flick; I remember watching it as a late night TV movie with my dad and older brother.

"Hitch….Hitch, I saw you. You're alive."

One of my favorite lines. Was able to pick it up for $1.50 USD when Blockbuster went bust. Makes me want to build another army but I've got too much to paint already.

Great movie. I would say the British arrogance could be considered swagger too, no? ;-)

Definitely a movie that pulls you into the Colonial era. Probably in my top 10 war movie flicks of all time.

"That's my boy 'ook! I've made a soldier of you!"

"Where's my bloody sergeant!?!"

The BEST!

The way I remember it I was sitting in my local barber shop reading an Argosy magazine article on Zulu. Shortly afterwards I was lucky enough to actually see it at the movie theatre. I think I was around 14 years old. I still think it is one of my all time favorites to this day.
