Chancellorsville, Gettysburg. by George W. Hicks ""To my right, more stout-hearted men in gray quickly stepped out as if an undulating snake began by moving its faraway head and the contracting muscles waited their turn to slide forward. Suddenly, color guards appeared to my front holding our 52nd regimental flag; unfurled but limp in the breezeless afternoon. My heart began to beat rapidly and I began to tremble knowing soon I would become part of this unwinding snake. "I nervously waited as I watched Colonel Marshall move to our front. I heard his shout among the background of destruction, "For the honor of our good old North State
forward!"' Thus began the drama of the greatest charge at Gettysburg; fifteen thousand Southerners moved across their field of destiny. Southern nonfiction narratives follow Confederate victories at a Chancellorsville crossroads and Eastern North Carolina, but by July the vision of Southern independence stalled at Gettysburg."
